Intel just took the worst beating in earnings in over a decade
JP234 said:tbornot said:It’s also likely that Apple sensed that Intel was a subsidiary of Microsoft, and their needs came first. “What do we have to lose?”,Apple thought as they took the M1 gamble. -
Apple Fitness+ review: Two years later, barely treads water
Having been through a number of years of PE classes in school with inept PE teachers I’ll pass, on Apple Fitness or from anyone else. I hated having an old guy shouting at me for “one more rep” then and I’m bloody well not going to pay to have someone do it over video now. I work out six days a week, I take the special and monthly challenges that come on my AW. But subscribing to a service? Not gonna happen. They can F all the way off. -
IBM cuts 3,900 jobs in latest round of big tech layoffs
What’s interesting in all of these layoffs is what’s being cut. A lot of these companies added people during covid, but it mostly isn’t a case of last in first out. No, MS cut big parts of their VR group, Amazon, gutted their Alexa group, IBM cuts are “ from IBM's healthcare divestiture, and also the Kyndryl Holdings IT services business that was spun off in 2022.” These are targeted cuts to money losing units. Covid gave a lot of companies the chance to take stock, and examine their units with a clear eye to what was working and what wasn’t.The era of pie in the sky concepts is over. -
New Mac Pro may not support PCI-E GPUs
ravnorodom said:So much modular design and now back to square one. This is going to be Mac trash can, the 2013 Mac Pro, all over again. Oh brother. But I could see them including support for standard board mounted RAM acting as a high speed virtual RAM disk. The GPUs are more of a problem though. We’ll see what happens.

M2 Pro Mac mini vs Mac Pro - compared
A couple of decades ago I had a string of Mac Pros. Over time as they got more and more powerful, I started moving down the line. Today I’m doing graphics and such that are head and shoulders beyond what I was doing then. But right now I’m doing it on a nine year old iMac and am looking at a Mac Mini to replace it.
What I do hasn’t gotten any less demanding, if anything the level is much higher. But the computers are so much more capable today that even the intro, bottom end Mac can easily take it and run. It’s really quite amazing.
