  • Apple details new APIs & Xcode Cloud for developers

Reading between the lines, all the software pieces for the AR/VR headset is already in place, pending the reveal.

From WeatherKit and MapKit features, to live text recognition and Metal3 graphics upscaling, I think they'll all be used to support the rumored realityOS features. The good thing is that since all the APIs are available cross-platform, porting to the new interface would be much easier. I don't see any other OS environment having such a seamless cross-device experience, and probably not for a long time.

  • Hard drive shortages could be driven by storage-based cryptocurrency

How woould verifying the availability of unused HDD space be tamper-proof? Wouldn't someone be able to hack the firmware to report much more free space than actually available?

  • How to cope with just 128GB of SSD storage on your Mac mini or MacBook

Can the author comment on what's hinted at here in the comments:

Using/living-with one of those super-small USB keys that barely pokes out of the side?

[I know it's not USB anymore...]

Are those fast enough for apps/video to get back and forth from one of those?

Advantage that they're always there, no cables, etc.

They can't be $149 either or someone would go for the $200 bump to 256GB.

    So 256GB for.... $49?

    I bought a 128GB USB3 tiny-thumbdrive for $27, but it's not Thunderbolt.

    Eric.

I'm using a SanDisk Ultra Fit 256 GB on my Mac Mini's Type A USB port, for keeping Media files.
They're mostly write-once, I don't use the USB drive for editing, since I don't think it'll be fast enough for writing large files (video or image) continually.

Unfortunately I don't think we'll see any equivalent for USB-C anytime soon, since the Ultra Fit drives makes use of the dead space for the orientation tab of the USB-A plug to mount the flash dies, while there is no dead space for the USB-C plug so everything will have to stick out of the port.

Edit: The Ultra Fit is useful for keeping less frequently used Applications as well, the read speed of USB 3.x is quick enough that it doesn't make a lot of difference whether it is run from internal SSD or the Ultra Fit.

  • How to turn the iOS 12 keyboard into a trackpad on any iPhone or iPad

I have an iPhone 6. The long press to activate trackpad works fine, and I can scroll around, but the selection of words etc. doesn't work. I tried using a second finger in trackpad mode to start selecting text; it sometimes activate the selection cursor, but it is not reliable and inconsistent, and does not work more often than not. I cannot successfully double press since lifting the finger off the space bar disables trackpad mode immediately.

Edit: After playing around a bit more, it seems that the second finger does not perform the selection.
What I did was to long press on the space bar, then after the keypad has turned into the trackpad, double tap using a second finger and hold it in place on the trackpad area. The original finger on the space bar then becomes the selection cursor to highlight the text to be selected. I couldn't get the word and paragraph selection to work though.

  • How to free up your Mac's internal storage by moving your iTunes Library to an external dr...

Currently I have my iTunes on an external HD, but as mentioned in the article, it suffers from the problem that if I open iTunes accidentally without the external HD mounted, it'll default to creating a new iTunes Library in my internal drive. However, that problem may not be an issue anymore ever since SanDisk came out with the 128 GB (and recently announced 256 GB) Ultrafit USB 3.x flash drives. It's small enough to leave plugged in and always mounted, and large enough for my modest collection of iTunes media files. YMMV.
