What to expect at WWDC 2020 - and what not to
ihatescreennames said:I’m mostly interested to know how the Keynote will be made available to view. I’ll be on vacation, so I wouldn’t be able to watch it live, but I could certainly watch a replay of it that night. -
Scotland police don't seem to have any problem getting data off locked iPhones
The biggest problem with requiring Apple to put a back door in its devices is that it will inevitably be more useful to the bad guys than the good guys and then law enforcement will be hastily asking Apple to remove the back door as money flows out of the accounts of the world’s citizens and into the coffers of the crims! I worked in law enforcement intelligence for many years and what you soon come to realise is that the bad guys have far better and greater resources than law enforcement agencies do AND, by their very nature, they don’t care about rules, policies or the law in how they utilise those resources. No back door that Apple could conceivably put in their devices will be immune from being used by criminals. They will find it and they will use it... then you can kiss any form of privacy (and your money) goodbye. -
How to use Sidecar in macOS Catalina with your iPad and your Mac
The article states “The Mac must have an Intel Skylake processor, or better. And it has to have USB-C, which must be built-in to the Mac, it can't be via an adapter.” which simply isn’t true. Perhaps, if you can’t make a wireless connection, that might be true...I wouldn’t know as I wirelessly hooked my 2015 iMac (which only has Thunderbolt 2 and USB3) to my iPad Pro2 without any drama at all.
It works brilliantly as both a second screen in Lightroom and my DAW (Presonus Studio One 4.5). The latter even allows me to move the faders/meters off to the iPad giving me all of the 5K main screen for channel editing. Haven’t tried it with Davinci Resolve yet but hoping that will work too.
When I’m working at home (small desk) doing some minor tweaking rather than at the studio (BIG desk with 3 huge monitors) it’s nice to perch the iPad next to the mouse pad and have not only a second screen but the use of the Apple Pencil too. Not everyone will find a use case for this new functionality but A LOT of creative artists in many fields will and Apple is to be congratulated for getting this working so well. -
I replaced my Mac with my iPad Pro for a week -- here's how it went
The software available for the iPad is still not up to par with that for the Mac. Microsoft’s iOS-based Office suite has serious limitations as do most of Adobe’s products. The gap is being closed it’s true (Adobe’s announcement of a soon-to-be-released full Photoshop version for iOS will be interesting) but it’s still a significant gap for all but the simplest of tasks. That said, I’ve adapted my working style and stopped carrying my MacBook Pro around quite a while ago as the iPad Pro covers most of what I need to do during the day (consulting work - heavy on email, note taking and researching) while having a better battery life and 4G internet access. I rely on the mighty 27” 5K iMac at home to do my photograph processing, sound engineering and video work along with working with complex Excel and Word files. The MacBook Pro rarely gets a run. Obviously, everyone works differently and not everyone can adapt as readily as I have. The best thing about current and future technology is the choices available and their interoperability which is constantly improving. -
Australia's largest bank rolls out support for Apple Pay
Sadly, Westpac bought St George Bank and have been stifling the life out of it ever since. St G used to be a leading innovator and would have been one of the first to adopt something like Apple Pay but still hasn't because of Westpac's greed. Get your sh!t together Westpac and take the shackles off St G!!!
