  • Users lobby 1Password to abandon new Electron version

    co-ords said:
I dropped them when they went to a subscription based model but reading this just strengthens my choice. There are enough alternatives!!
I’m not sure about the alternative’s yet but I also dropped upgrading with the subscription model. I’m still using 1PW on my phone where v6 still works but it’s gone on my mac when it broke and 1PW’s ans is upgrade to 7. Handoff saves me on Mac from phone but the time is coming!

I need an alternative that is not cloud based so will have to start researching again

  • Apple issues $6.5B bond to fund buyback, acquisitions

I’m not understanding the debt angle. They tend to maintain around 200 million in cash, so why pay interest on debt. Unless it provides tax savings somehow.
Cash is worthless due to the rate the FED is printing currency. Buying back their own shares using debt mitigates that problem along with tax advantages

  • Apple, Goldman Sachs working on Apple Pay 'buy now, pay later' service

We have Zip NZ and a couple of other providers who offer exactly this 4 x 2 weekly payments at many retailers who sign up for the service. It’s viewed by many as a way to spread cash flow without using a credit card or your bank. No fees are paid by the customer it can be activated by the website or App on any brand phone

  • Woman claims Apple Store lost her MacBook, later found

No one has considered the problem with security of data if computer was lost in the system with intact data on the drive. The company IT department would not have a leg to stand on if they had approved the repair. Therefore it sounds like it was a bring your own device or a company computer that she broke and repaired on her own bat. To be fair the “job-on-line” statement could have been a plaintive wail, rather than a complaint against Apple. We just don’t have the data — pun intended

  • Apple's head of privacy doubles down on anti-sideloading stance

"Even users who intend -- they've consciously thought themselves that they are only going to download apps from the App Store -- well, the attackers know this," he says, "so they're going to try to convince that user that they're downloading an app from the App Store even when that's not happening."
While I in no way, shape, or form support forcing Apple to open up to other App Stores, this particular argument doesn't hold much water.  Apple could add a switch to iOS that simply disallows purchases or downloads from any App Store but Apple's own.  Such an option could be set to "disallow" by default.  Flipping that switch off could require authentication, i.e. password, Touch ID, or Face ID.
Exactly. No one forced to allow side-loading. My opinion is this has far more to do with protecting services revenue. While I don't think US owners would play much outside of the official Apple AppStore, I think Asian and Chinese iPhone/iPad owners would be more comfortably with doing so. Apple might see some slide in those regions AppStore profits which is what all the distraction from "security" handwringing is trying to avoid.
Your both missing a major point. You are only looking at today’s picture with all Apps on the Apple App Store. Picture if you will, major developers experimenting with their own web stores — Omni, 1Password, DEVONthink, etc. We would all be forced for one App or another to side load. Whatever form it takes, in this direction lies chaos.
