  • Smallest Mac yet is perfect Apple Vision Pro companion with the right battery pack

Interesting. Part of the price of a MacBook is also the battery, which also lasts longer than two hours and has everything needed to logon to it without extra devices. One really nice thing about the Mac Mini route and battery is the battery is easily replaced after the service life is over. One question I have, is what is more efficient for power, converting to AC for the Mini or running through USB-C to a MacBook? Both have conversion.

I have to disagree here because this turns the AVP into a $3500 monitor for a Mac that you’re probably spending just as much money for. Apple still needs to make a case for AVP’s NATIVE APPS to make it a successful product. Show what they can do with the rest of their apps they have yet to bring to visionOS. Much like how they said years ago that iPad apps shouldn’t be expanded iPhone apps and instead do more within the extra real estate, that same notion now needs to be made from the iPad to the AVP. Apple hasn’t even cracked the surface yet for what their own apps are capable of in spatial computing, so it’s no wonder why the “killer app” has yet to really materialize. But a tethered feature for the Mac is not it.
This monitor use case is only one option, and this is portable. You are not taking your $3500 monitor setup on a train, or in a car. You still have your other use cases and this is a private viewing.

  • Apple execs address Mac mini's hidden power button in 2024 redesign

Looking at the tear down the the power button connects using two pins. Not sure what connector type the power button uses, however someone could rig something up to extend the button outside the case or make an extension cord for the button to be extended outside the case, to an entirely new button if you wish, or even a relay. For those needing an easy to hit button I suggest this large button. You can even connect many buttons in parallel! Have a button in the back, have a button in the front, or in a hidden spot under your desk in case someone invades your home and you need to bug out! How about using your feet with a floor switch? Here is a guide to making cheap floor switches.

  • Apple execs address Mac mini's hidden power button in 2024 redesign

There is a stunning lack of knowledge of what power buttons actually do in modern electronics. Most of what we call power buttons, actually only put the device in standby and they still consume power. The power button doesn't protect against power problems by shutting the computer or other devices down. Those devices are still waiting on commands to go active and are still conceded to power. Here is a hint, if you can power it on using a remote, or button instead of a switch, the device was in standby mode and not fully powered off. What we call power buttons, do not latch the power in one state or another by themselves. They are normally open, momentary SPST switches. All they do is briefly tell the power logic that you are pushing the button. For remote controlled devices, the power logic needs to respond to IR or RF responses and that requires power to do so.

If you are worried about power problems at night, you should be worried about power problems during the day and have the device using a surge protector or better yet a UPS. Don't forget these power protection devices also consume power.

I leave my devices on so they can backup, apply updates, process mail, etc.

Steve Jobs was obsessed with profit margins and Tim Cook is doing the same so putting the power button in a totally stupid location is just a way to save a dollar or two and not cut into the profit margins by putting the power button on the case.      Then Apple calling in the troops of is hardcore fanboy YouTubers to spread the word.... just say who turns off their Macs"  as the battlecry to spread.      Sorry Apple you were being cheap not willing to give up dollar of profit margin to do something right.   I bet Apple Intelligence would tell Cook "that's a stupid idea Tim".
There is a power button on the case.
