  • M4 Mac mini review: The first redesign in years hides incredible computing power

No USB-A on a Mac Mini isn’t a big deal, but it’s a huge deal on a MacBook. I just bought an M1 MacBook Air, and I like it, but there is no real replacement for my low profile USB-A thumb drive. I’m going to have to use a fragile 90 degree adapter to connect my USB-A thumb drive to one of the two USB-C ports. Not a great solution.
I have a small hub that does all that for my MBP.

Or you could switch to one of these growing number of USB-C thumb drives.
Actually, neither of those solutions works for me. On my old 11 inch Air, I leave my LOW PROFILE (1/4” protrusion) 512gb thumb drive in the USB-A port practically all the time—it’s a permanent appendage to it and it’s where I save all of my data files. Because of USB-C’s limits to minimization, there is no pathway to that size drive footprint, and I need the extra storage to avoid using up my internal drive space. The only solution is to add structural support to the adapter. I certainly use hubs and other thumb drives occasionally, but not permanently attached. In this configuration, I can pick up my Air and walk out the door without worrying about wagging a bag of attachments with me. Apple throws a monkey wrench into things when they don’t include USB-A—major oversight IMO. I know why they do it—it’s an easy way to coerce buyers into upgrading to a more expensive model, but I’m on a limited budget.

You can get dumb drives with both USB-C and USB-A plugs on them. Still quite tiny.

  • iPhones on iOS 18.1 will automatically reboot and lock down after being idle for a while

So the cops that originally said this was happening weren't idiots. They were on to something.
Well...they were kind of idiots because they came up with a cockamamy story about how the phones were secretly talking to each other and sending covert signals to reboot when this is a much more simple and less "conspiracy" kinda answer. They could have easily reported that there was some kind of rebooting going on, however they insisted it was more of a conspiracy to try and make Apple look shady and therefore they're being idiots about it.
The thing is, iPhones do "Secretly" communicate with each other. That's how your iPhone is findable after powering it off. A powered on phone receiving the lost or stolen command from another iPhone is absolutely a thing. If Apple has updated it's theft protection to include a reboot command, its not magic or cockamamy, just a simple update.
Some of the phone the police had were in faraday cages, which if functioning correctly, will prevent all wireless communication. No secret communication possible. This is the only plausible explanation.

  • Apple makes $1.1 billion commitment to expand satellite messaging

People are over estimating how much bandwidth they can get between satellites and them. This is for low bandwidth applications.

What features are missing when using the intel macs?

Looks like Apple is feeling comfortable making even more brazen planned obsolescence moves with their intel culling process.
Less plausible deniability and more straight up. I guess they figure not enough people to make noise to care.

Exactly right. This is just a money grab.

The compatibility for Macs goes back as old as Mac Book Air and Mac mini from 2018, yet it says, "Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 11.4 or later" Those are not ASi Macs for the keyboard with numerical keypad. Trackpad is the same, except the OS requirements of, "Bluetooth-enabled Mac with OS X 10.11 or later." Mouse same Macs, "Bluetooth-enabled Mac with OS X 10.11 or later." Keyboard without the keypad is the same as with the keypad for requirements.
How useful/convenient is a packet of cool-aid powder when the provider decides stop you from getting water.

I asked about what was removed because the things that where removed are sus.
ie: touchID and what was needed to make it function.
They just came out with the usb-c devices. Give them time to get everything working. The new computers don’t even come out until the 8th. Not sure what Bluetooth version these use, but that can also limit what computers they will connect to. Yes the Secure Enclave places a part as you don’t man in the middle attacks to be successful. As it is there is no proof and Apple’s website says it will support some intel computers and older OS versions than Sequoia.
