  • Apple threatened to pull Facebook from the App Store over human trafficking

    DAalseth said:
It's clear that FB is an evil company, run by a sociopath, that will do and allow anything for money. That's a given.
It's also clear that human trafficking is a huge problem that has to be tackled whenever and wherever it appears.

This does bring up an interesting question though. When is it a companies duty to step in and regulate how their product is used? When do they have the RIGHT to dicatarte this? Even more how is it their right to dictate how OTHER companies apps are used?
Various gangs and mafiosi like Ford Expeditions for their criminal activities. They have plenty of room, you can get them with dark windows standard, and they are very tough. It's the same reason clandestine "security" organizations use them. Should Apple ban Ford's advertising and any apps they have because of this? Should Apple ban other apps that DO allow Ford advertisements?
It's one thing when a country such as China says Apple cannot offer Twitter in the AppStore. It's another when Apple rejects an App because it doesn't fit with their image. It's my phone. If I want, for example, a porn app on it how is it Apples place to say no? If I want to use an app in a way that Apple doesn't agree with, how do they have the right to say that's not allowed? It's my phone. It's my time. It's my business.

Who made them arbiter of how I can use the device I paid for?

I wonder if this is part of the reason there is growing pressure to allow side loading of Apps on Apple devices?
Because you are not seeing that the App Store belongs to Apple so they make the rules of how/what they want to sale.

You may own the iPhone hardware but you don’t own the OS heck you don't even own the apps. You may think you do but then the developer changes to a subscription model and you are f or build an entire new app that you have to pay again and stopped supporting the one you think you owned.

Same as Target not wanting Salvation Army outside the stores.

Same as Walmart for allowing Salvation Army.

Same as a restaurant when they decide to offer a certain Menu.

You know what you are getting yourself into when buying the iPhone. I bet you (not you everyone really) tap Agree, Next, Next, Next at setup without reading.

On your example of Ford the crimes are not being committed on an iPhone app. Human trafficking was directly happening through the Facebook app  violating the App Store rules.   So they get to regulate and intervene directly.

  • Fired Apple employee who aired workplace concerns gets approval to sue company

Apple have plenty of lawyers…maybe the same amount of HR employees.

BUT they decided to send her the most vague termination email and it only screams retaliation.

A lot of you in the comments are dreaming if a lawyer isn’t going to be interested in representing her. This is a great case for settle and NDA. She maybe mental or not (I am not a doctor to diagnose her through internet articles like most of you) but she (her case) may be catalyst for other Apple disgruntled employees to come forward for similar situations.

How many of the people screaming about CSAM have Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and google apps on their devices and an Amazon or google smart speaker in their home?
Implying Apple is not any worse than "everyone else" is not a ringing endorsement.

I won't use a smart speaker, but regarding Facebook & co. you are comparing apples to oranges – just don't give these apps access to your photos etc. and think about what you are uploading and you will be fine.
my point was not comparing Apple to any of these other corporations. My point was that it's a bit hypocritical to be completely ok with all of these other 'services' snooping, scraping, monetizing and otherwise surveilling your personally life and then to start screaming about Apple trying to do something to protect the most vulnerable people in society in a way that preserves people's privacy.

Everyone makes the obligatory statement that they're against exploiting children, but somehow they're not willing to put their money where their mouth is. But they are willing to give up their privacy for the ability to brag about their vacation, post conspiracy theories and snoop on their neighbors. I find it a very sad commentary on people's values.
You are trying to make a point that’s flawed. For your point to work every single person must have an account with Facebook or be subscribed to those other services for the hypocritical claim. Not everyone have given access to their life on social media or the other services you mentioned. Only a person inside the social media bubble thinks that everyone has a facebook or a similar service. Some of us recognize and understand what’s privacy is/should be about.

  • Civil rights groups worldwide ask Apple to drop CSAM plans

FYI to EFF: totalitarian governments already have their populations under surveillance. You're not thwarting totalitarianism by having Apple remove the CSAM hash scanning capability. Citizens of China, Russia, Turkey etc. use smartphones and are still under totalitarian control regardless.
So what you are saying is that since China, Russia and Turkey have their population under surveillance. Then countries under a Democracy shouldn’t express their VALID privacy concerns about the implementation of this scanning mechanism.

People don’t forget that none of the people arguing about this implementation are against of protecting children or scanning CSAM material which btw already occurs on most cloud services…

is about on the wrong hands or even with government pressure what else can I scan on that device…

again not totalitarian governments because they just do it. I am talking about every other government.

It doesn’t matter how many times Apple will try to explain it. It has that feeling of being a slippery slope for privacy in general.

  • Epic Games CEO slams Apple 'government spyware'

Its funny that everyone is calling Apple out on this, but don’t mention that this is already happening on other major cloud platforms. Why not call Amazon out as well. Also, Tim hasn’t mentioned that Epic’s owners, Tencent already surveil Chinese citizens. Having said that, I can appreciate the slippery slope concerns.
Maybe because Amazon or Google doesn’t shout “How great we are regarding to privacy”

iCloud or any other Cloud content is already being scanned then why implement something shady like this. Tarnishing their reputation of protecting their customers data.
