Yes, Apple is going to have to stop the nonsense worldwide, and start charging all developers license fees for any and every part of Apple's IP that is used in any application they develop -- in other words go old school.
Your suggestion that companies should pay for running on Apple platforms is in no way old school. It was never like that.
    • Adobe doesn't pay Apple for letting Photoshop on macOS save files or print or anything else.
    • Delta doesn't pay Apple for API access on iOS.
    • And Appleinsider doesn't pay for this site to use WebKit.
I'm OK with Apple charging for services (iCloud and more) and for upgrades to the OS. And for Apple to charge for selling and distributing software. But for API access? Like 1 cent for each time I open an app? No way!
    I'm sorry, I apologize.

When I wrote old school, I meant really old school, back in the days when the cost of Visual Studio was beyond most independent developers as was just the documentation of the Mac interface.  Am I the only one that remembers the "Macintosh Programmers Workshop", "Inside Macintosh" or the "Macintosh Toolbox Documentation"?

Back in those days one did have to pay a license fee to companies like Microsoft and others just to use the interfaces.

I remember those days and I fear that the way things are going, those days are coming back.

For some reason many people seem to think that Apple, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, and the rest of the companies that make the core features of the things we use today have no right to recover the costs of developing and maintaining those tools and services.  Or they think that somehow, they know what those tools and services should actually cost and want to limit how much the companies charge for them to the imaginary values they made up

Are companies in it to make as much money as they can?  Probably.  Is there a problem with their approach to maximizing their profits? I think so.  Are things going to get better with courts and governments trying to decide how they run their businesses? Really? Does anyone think that?

Maybe I'm just old and am too bothered by those young kids on my lawn.

(Yes, I know Microsoft didn't write the Apple documentation or develop the Apple OS.  But it did appear to me , back in those caveman days, that even then Apple tried to be a less expensive platform to develop on.  But even with that it still wasn't cheap for an individual developer.  I still have my original Apple II+, my first Mac SE, and even my early MPW and CodeWarrior Gold discs.)

Apple is eventually going to have to stop the nonsense worldwide.  They need to stop fighting users and allow normal software installation.  It's MY iPhone, not Apple's iPhone.
Yes, Apple is going to have to stop the nonsense worldwide, and start charging all developers license fees for any and every part of Apple's IP that is used in any application they develop -- in other words go old school.  Of course that will absolutely eliminate any free software and in fact eliminate any software from any but the largest best funded software development corporations.  That will make all the politicians and big corporations happy -- they'll be getting there money.  The average user will be screwed of course, but who cares about them.

  • Apple faces iCloud lawsuit after after judge reverses victory

So I've been using Apple products for a few years now, and as for forcing or coercing people to use iCloud, I don't see it.  There are better options for cloud storage than iCloud, many of which are far cheaper and have better functionality.  There are definitely backup options that are far better in functionality.  And based on my own experience, integrating at least some of these options in to the Apple ecosystem is extremely easy.

As far as I can see the only advantage Apple has over the others is name recognition.  There are so many other options many people just go with Apple because they recognize the name and stick with it.  It's easy.  Not easier to use, but easier to pick -- you don't have to do any research or thinking.

And if there is anything obvious about America today it's that the majority of people hate to do research or think.

So from my point of view the real question here is whether Apple is responsible because their users are lazy.

Unfortunately, given that extreme laziness is obviously a very common trait among Americans, the lawyers for the plaintiffs here have an extremely good chance of convincing a lazy judge and lazy jury that their line of bullshit means that Apple is responsible for their client's laziness.

Maybe, it's not just laziness... Probably a hefty dose of stupidity too.

  • Apple & Google profit as Chinese VPNs collect your private data

I'm kind of confused here --

Is the author of the article suggesting that Apple and Google should discriminate against any/all app developers based on their country of origin, or are they suggesting that Apple and Google should do a deep dive background check of every single app developer that submits to their App Store, or are they suggesting that anytime some "random" researcher (or reporter) reports to them, without any real proof, that some app "might" be violating developers guidelines they immediately pull the app and sanction the developer?

  • Apple appeal to pause injunction enforcement allowing external linking fails

Further evidence that the United States Constitution is no longer relevant, nor the guiding document of the law in the Untied States of America.  Watch out Amazon, Google, Target, Walmart, and every other business owner in America, they'll be coming for you in the future...
