EU to propose common charger for all smartphones, ignores Apple's protest

The EU continues to maintain that a common standard would reduce electronic waste
There is no requirement for them to get involved the the connecting leads - just the power supply, that is where the majority of waste is.
I don't consider this is a problem, it's just that it will have some unintended consequences with more energy being wasted in the equipment. -

Why does the connector in the phone iPad etc even matter? it’s about the charger and as different countries have different standards on the AC side the EU can have whatever it wants.
In order to standardise on power output levels and voltages it may mean having to use a more powerful adaptor than is strictly necessary and wasting energy in the form of heat.
Having said all that, modern power supplies are really quite efficient, It's probably only a problem in power hungry devices.

As “no good deed goes unpunished” I might question the wisdom of this, however someone, somewhere needs to take a stand against all sorts of “miss-deeds”
And whist it may be preferable for the law enforcement of countries to do this they are not always the best equipped to do so.
It may well be that all the corporations that claim to just be the “messengers” and not the “authors” need to take a more responsible attitude the what they host.
