  • Kuo doubles down on iPhone 15 Pro having no physical buttons

I’d imagine they could use a piezoelectric switch that only requires pressure to affect the switching action, as opposed to a capacitive switch that has issues with gloves and cases. This would not solve the issue related to the ability to visually detect whether the switchable function is on/off. Adding tiny always-on pilot lights (LEDs) (red when OFF, green or no light when ON) could be used to solve that problem but it wouldn’t solve the problem of how to feel the ringer switch position. That could be solved by adding a distinct response tone/beep to double tapping the back of the phone - or something similar.

There are obviously ways to work around potential issues, but they’d have to weigh the cost/benefits. Personally I’d love it if Apple put a tiny red LED next to the ringer on/off switch that lit up (or slowly pulsed to conserve the battery even more) when the ringer switch is in the OFF position. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten that the ringer switch is turned off. As far as the pilot LEDs, I’m talking the tiniest possible, like the ones on the Magic Trackpad. Of course they’d have to be totally sealed to maintain the waterproofing of the device.

Ugh, no.  I keep my phone beside my bed, I don't want a LED messing up my sleep, and I don't want to have to put gaffer tape on my phone.
    Gaffer tape is nice  ;)

  • Apple considering 2025 debut of touchscreen MacBook Pro

It's much needed, people keep touching the displays nowadays.
People have always been touching displays. I have been wiping smudges for more than 30 years. Maybe I could use this new feature to display a sign with the text “Keep your dirty fingers off my screen!”

  • Key staff driving Apple search engine leave to rejoin Google

Apple desperately needs to improve their search (eg I always use Google to find Apple developer documents because Apple's own tools are so poor).

If they had their own search engine, they could then make Maps a whole more useful informative about businesses etc.
I agree but seems the project has failed. Apple is too big and too corporate to really make their services better than they need to be.

Apple Services is simply not their bread and butter - it's always a second tier also-ran behind what creates cash, phones and hardware. Apple services are always 1% above the absolute minimum beyond which Apple would lose hardware sales.

I have been trying to use iCloud sync - with billions in expenses, vast data centers, and probably 1Bn users or more, you would think that it's as good as Dropbox. But it is worse in every aspect, I am switching back to Dropbox now. Even though Dropbox is basically like giving all your files to the CIA - but the service just works flawlessly.
@Calamander  Could you please share a few details on why you think iCloud is inferior to Dropbox?

  • U.S. antitrust officials ask to be heard in Epic vs. Apple appeal

    tht said:
It’s going to be interesting what the government is going to say. Their only real recourse is “steering” the interpretation of US antitrust law towards EU competition laws. The EU laws are sufficiently vague enough such that they can make a minority player run afoul of competition laws.

If it is just you plain USA antitrust, they’ve got nothing. Not only that, the market opportunities for developers has only increased since the lawsuit started. If the trial was today, it should be laughed out of court as Epic has multiple ways to get in front of iOS users now, and it has more mobile platforms that is available to them.
If things go according to actual law and the way American court works, the government WONT GET TO SAY ANYTHING. This isn’t government business. This is a private sector dispute between two civil companies. Any government intervention is illegal - hence the request instead of just taking over. Apple is foolish to not oppose such an unconstitutional and illegal interference by the current administration.

Kind of seems like we are getting a peak behind the door of what Epics out-of-nowhere lawsuit is really about and who is involved. Sweeney is a goofy dudebro. Not the brightest guy and not a maverick. For him to go there was strange. And now we have to wonder if this doesn’t originate in deeper unexpected places.
    Deeper, yes. Unexpected, no.

  • Oeplay MusicStar5 review: Fantastic audio quality with a few drawbacks

No Airplay is a big no-no to me. And it doesn’t have its own WiFi. Having to stream from a device that always needs to be charged and in range sucks, and feels really old (just like having a remote does).

Also, lossless can apparently only be achieved over USB:
OEPLAY supports fully lossless audio playback directly over USB.”
And how will this even work with a pair of stereo speakers? Do you have to connect both of them to a USB each then?

I like the design though. Am sure it’s gonna be a ball owning one.
