  • Apple TV 4K 2022 review: An Apple Arcade playground

But, if you have a peripheral on your network that you know is a bandwidth hog, you should wire it if you can. A video-streaming set-top device is the definition of a bandwidth hog.
Only if people are watching 4K content right? How many TV streamers watch in 4K?

The ultimate constraint to a device's speed is Internet speed. Unless you've got really slow internet access, in nearly every case, a Gigabit Ethernet network will be faster than wireless -- and video streaming to it won't clog up your Wi-Fi network.
Everyone has slow Internet? Average Internet speed is about 200 Mbit/s in the USA. Then, the Apple TV have WiFi 6 at about 1 Gbit/s? So, what is the driving need to use Ethernet?
In areas where the 5GHz spectrum is saturated, 1Gbit over wifi is fanciful. This is where wired is ideal.

  • iOS 16.0.3 & watchOS 9.0.2 updates arrive with bug & security fixes

iOS 16 has some pretty glaring bugs still.

AirPlay to my Homepods often fails, or takes so long to start that iOS times out and resumes playing locally; only for the Homepod to start playing a few seconds later. Then it's a case of stopping the local playback, clicking the Airplay icon again and then choosing "control other devices" then touch the HP. A proper mess.

The new home screen's notifications show up with square edges sometimes only for them to pop to round ones when you interact. The Music widget sometimes shows half sized so the controls are chopped off. It's more like a late stage beta than a final 3 versions in.

Battery drain is still *much* higher on iOS16 too. Used to get to the end of the day with 80% battery remaining on my 13 Pro, I was stunned. Now it's more like 65% left.

Not a bug but the new video controls are idiotic. Why put the play/pause/skip controls in the middle of the screen overlaying and therefore obscuring the video?! Oh and they sometimes show up squashed too. They moved for the sake of moving.

As an aside, the HPs have lost the ability to play news by saying "What's the news" too, replying with "I found some web results". But Homepod Siri is broken most of the time so it's actually surprising when it works. Asking to play my favourites mix stopped working the other day, it starts playing "Favourites Mix" by some artist I've never played before. Seems to be fixed now. Do they do no regression testing at all at Apple?

  • Apple plans offering more advertising to users via apps

    elijahg said:
I see ads in the App Store, but the ads are for apps and usually show me something very similar to what I was searching for. This article says there are ads in News and Stocks but I don’t see any ads in either of those (unless links to news stories about the company whose stock ticker I’m currently viewing count as ads).

Can anyone show me what an ad in News or Stocks looks like?
I get ads despite paying for News+ and it pisses me off. They're iAds so supplied by Apple, not embedded by the news outlet.
Can you screenshot one? I don’t see any on my iPhone or iPad. I just checked now and I don’t see any one either (or if I do I’m unaware they are ads). I haven’t checked my Mac but I don’t really do news on it much.

The only time I see ads are when I click through, some articles will have them but they don’t appear to be iAds. I get “Recommended Reads” and “Related Stories” but I don’t count those as ads. Maybe I should?
Sure thing, here's one. Clicking the blue link also reveals some interesting info, also attached. Since reading that I have turned off location services for News and the App Store, since they seem to think it's ok to use App Store location to serve geographic ads in News. I do not want Apple using my location for their own purposes, "anonymised" or not. I was not informed upfront that it would be used for advertising and therefore profiling. Both of which are very Google.

EDIT: Forgot that I also get full screen ads when swiping left/right through stories. Extremely intrusive, especially for a paid service. That and ads in the feed too. The ads are pretty trashy, and I even just got an ad for a Honor phone... Makes me very glad to have an ad blocker - but I shouldn't need to.

  • Updated HomePod, new HomePod mini rumored for early 2023

The original husky-boy HomePod sounds freakishly good for its size. I have mine sitting on a shelf on one end of an open lower level (~1000 sqft) and it easily fills the entire space with wonderful sound. On the same shelf system I have the remnants of my old analog HiFi system with decent speakers, a turntable, and an Apple TV and DAC plugged into the receiver's aux port. I can stream my Apple Music through either system. The old analog receiver can obviously put out more raw sound intensity, there's a certain nostalgia about using all of my old gear, and playing my old vinyl is cool. But truth be told, the HomePod isn't really a step down when it comes to the overall listening experience within the same space.

When I want to use the component based system I have to fire up my TV, Apple TV, receiver, and DAC and then use the Apple TV remote to either stream from Apple Music or point it to one of my Macs that contains my Apple Music collection locally. That's not a big deal, but to use the HomePod all I have to do is say "Hey Siri, play my music" and there it is, filling my space with music that sounds nearly as good as what my old component system can muster. Of course if you have a better HiFi system your experience may be quite different.

As others have probably discovered, Siri on the HomePod is o...k, and if you talk to it like you'd talk to a 3-year old and stay within a limited range of topics, like music, the weather, or requesting a podcast you'll probably get what you want. I'm okay with what Siri on HomePod does around 90% of the time, so it's no big deal. The sound quality of the HomePod more than makes up for the minor shortcomings that Siri sometimes presents.
I think we can comfortably say Siri will be no better on any newer HP, as it's not improved for the last 8 years. My full-size HP had another Siri issue yesterday, asking it "What's the news" resulted in "I have found some web results, I've sent them to your iPhone". Repeating the question wouldn't work, only asking it to play the <source> news podcast worked. Seems to be working again today.

  • The cheesegrater Mac Pro could still be the best Mac ever made

I bought my Mac Pro a bit before the cheese grater. But after the amazing laptops and the max studio, you really consider this the best max ever made? I admit it’s competing, at least for it’s time. But this article seems 3 years late.  Basically this had internal storage and good pci expansion. That makes it the best mac ever made?  Meh. It was important at the time. And I do respect that. But im Not sure it qualifies it for the honors you are trying to give it.
You... bought your Mac Pro before the cheese grater? I don't think you did somehow.

It was the best Mac for Pros who need expansion, upgradability, power and value. Unlike the current Mac Pro, it was very respectably priced. Furthermore, It was a machine without the outcomes of Apple's undesired "courage"; the current Mac Pro seems more like a tech demo than a real machine, with the resulting price tag to go with it.
