Apple is playing the long game

Apple is playing the long game with regard to HomeKit as well and I think that is why we haven't seen a competitor to the Amazon dot and echo.
Apple doesn't want to spook their HomeKit partners by competing with them in the HomeKit hardware space.

I wish Apple would make a device that is a hybrid of the Echo dot and the Eero WiFi System.

For $300 you get 3 "Siri hubs"
Replaces your current WiFi routers with a mesh network that works well.
Typical placement: 1) Kitchen 2) Livingroom 3) Master bedroom
Each Siri hub has a microphone array that is always listening for questions or commands.

Eero already works with Amazon Alexa and can do the following...


This is the kind of skills Siri/HomeKit need!
While the Eero solution is nice you would need to purchase 3 Eeros($375) and 3 Echo Dots($150)...$525!

I have a love/hate relationship with Amazon and Google. But admittedly there are things they do really well and at some point I may be forced to interact with their digital assistants in order to do certain things. 
That is unless I can get Siri to do it.

"Hey Siri, tell Cortana to ask Alexa to Google 'disintermediation'"

The real problem with Siri is app support.
You can't expect Apple to do all the leg work of supporting every possible field of human endeavor.
I have approximately 100-120 apps on my iPhone.
Only 4 apps support Siri interaction!  Less than 4%!!!

SiriKit currently supports only 7 domains and intents:
1 Ride Booking “Get me a ride to SFO via MyRidesApp.”
2 Messaging “Send a text to Carey using MyTextApp.”
3 Photo Search “Look for beach photos taken last summer in MyPhotosApp.”
4 Payments “Send $100 to John for dinner last night using MyPayApp.”
5 VoIP Calling “Call Mike on my MyVoIPApp.”
6 Workouts “Start my daily run workout from MyWorkoutApp.”
7 Climate and radio (CarPlay) “Set the heater to 72 degrees.”

Apple needs to significantly expand SiriKit to give more developers the tools to take advantage of it.
