It might be more valuable if Apple could find a way to measure a user's eyestrain, disorientation, vertigo, detachment from reality, and proximity to danger when wearing them while walking, bicycling and driving. And turn them off. And yes, people WILL soon be wearing them outside, while cycling and driving. You can't fix stupid, and there is plenty of stupid out there. Every single day, I see people with cars 1-2 years old, with their eyes down in their laps, looking at their phone screens. In cars that have CarPlay and Android Auto, which apparently they don't know how to use!

This comes under the category of "who cares about the box?" for me.

Ever since I saw a heads-up display on an F-16, I've been longing for the same feature on my cars. In 2022, we bought our first car with HUD, but it's a long way from being a practical alternative to the dash screen. Our new Volvo has replaced too many of the old-school knobs, buttons and dials that we could operate without taking our eyes off the road, with a hierarchal touchscreen. Now, my eyes have to leave the road to look at the screen and manipulate through menus for any function. Hierarchal is just fine on a phone or computer, but it's dangerously implemented in all the new cars we looked at, sometimes requiring navigation through 2-3 layers, and choosing from multiple options in each. I like to watch where I'm going, and hope the automakers can get more and more functions to a place where I don't have to either risk not seeing emergent dangers, or pulling over and stopping to manipulate the car's settings. Even the radio requires looking at the screen to find a station, or switch between FM and Sirius XM broadcasts. And there are a LOT of XM stations!

So what is this miraculous "periscope" that everyone is dreaming about? Does it take pictures underwater, or around the corner?
