  • Kindle adds 'Get Book' buy button to where it always belonged

All this legislating from the bench will hopefully be dealt with before too long. In the meantime, it’s exposing these shady organizations (who make money from other being on their stores) as extortionists, only putting in work if they don’t pay to be in someone else’s store.

It’s why I no longer have an Amazon subscription nor a Spotify one. It’s a matter of principle. Doesn’t alter my lifestyle at all. I’ve always found it healthier and have met lots of good people by always avoiding the card reader at the pump and the self-checkout at various retailers. Going to the human being at the register is the way to go.

Apple Books are usually presented much nicer than kindle anyway. And Apple Music has inched closer to the old iTunes simplicity that Spotify copied to begin with.
Apple does the same thing though, right? If I try to subscribe to Apple TV+ on my Fire TV, the message that pops-up says:

”How to Watch — In-app purchases aren’t allowed on this device. To watch here, you must have subscribed to Apple TV+ on an Apple device.”

  • Apple TV+ isn't micromanagement hell -- for some creatives

    tht said:
This narrative, that Apple micromanages, sounds batshit insane. What is the media, studios and filmmakers expecting here? How is it different from anything else? I find it hard to believe that Netflix or Amazon gives film makers complete freedom.
Netflix was known for just that. Not “complete freedom”, of course. But — years ago — the common narrative (almost a joke really) was that Netflix would green light any and everything. Netflix would throw actual burlap “$” symbol bags at creators (this would be the joke part) and let them make whatever they wanted to make. If you track down creator podcasts and creator interviews from 7+ years ago, you can hear and read creators themselves heap tons of praise at Netflix for the creative freedom (and money!) Netflix gave to creators.

That’s level of creative freedom (and money!) has been reined-in in more recent years. But yeah, that was what Netflix was known for in the not too distance past — at a similar-ish time when Apple was known for micromanaging creators. That’s why the first sentence in this article says: “While Apple TV+ has a reputation for micromanagement, it seems that it's not as bad as it once was.” That was what Apple was known for in the past (in contrast to Netflix at the time).

Inflation is around 4%, Apple delivered 8%, and Microsoft... 18%. Apple is standing still but priced as if the company delivering massive growth.

Some of that is true on the Surface, but Apple is also a vertical computer company operating system and hardware which means they are doing more than Microsoft, who like most basically software companies is just floating along the Surface helped in their case by market inertia.
Microsoft is even more vertical. Microsoft moved from selling software to cloud hosting - a combo of software, access to hardware, and operations. MS Azure alone is 3x the revenue of Apple services. Xbox hardware + ownership of gaming studios + cloud services is as vertical as you get. Or MS Copilot built with help from OpenAI (49% MS). You don't see Xcode services or Apple using a subsidiary like Claris at all.

Cook and his team of penny-pinchers made Apple #2 to Microsoft. That is not OK.
“made Apple #2 to Microsoft” meaning market capitalization? If that is what you mean, Apple was #1 less than… one Thursday ago, lol.

  • Apple may revive battery case accessory for iPhone 17 Air

It’s sad that Apple discontinued the MagSafe battery pack. I bought two when I found that out and they’re very handy. I also like the tie-in to iPhones so you can see the battery pack’s battery too. I hope they will revive it with USB-C charging.
I would also love another Apple MagSafe battery pack. I use mine every day. I don’t know what the battery health is (I don’t think there is an official way to check), but it’s maybe around 70-75% at this point (I assume after nearly four years of use). It would be great if Apple were to release a new one to coincide with the iPhone 17 Air’s release.

Obviously there are MagSafe and Qi2 battery packs from third parties, but the Apple MagSafe battery pack’s reverse charging and ability to see the battery level on the battery widget and lock screen are two great features.

  • iPhone 17 rumors: More speed & ProMotion screen, but no big redesign

Another underwhelming iPhone like “more of the same”. Why call it iPhone 17 if it is the same as the iPhone 16? Why yearly upgrade cycles if Apple has nothing to bring to the table? Competition has more innovation to offer in almost all aspects including photography. I even don’t see a compelling reason to upgrade my iphone 14 pro max. I do most of my photography with my Xiaomi 14 ultra.
If this specific set of rumors mentioned in this article is true, the iPhone 17 (no suffix) would be quite an upgrade over the iPhone 16 (no suffix): 12GB vs 8GB and a variable 1-120Hz display vs a fixed 60Hz display.

You just bought a new flagship phone sometime relative recently, so maybe it’s not super compelling from your perspective. But for those of with 3+ year old iPhone (mine will be 4 years old when iPhone 17 is released), ProMotion and 12GB would be very compelling reasons to upgrade. Assuming those rumors turn out to be true, of course.
