  • Meta's VR ambitions Doomed as Carmack exits

I'm very surprised AppleInsider didn't mention in the article the reason why they used the trigger word "Doomed" in the title!  Carmack co-created the game Doom (and Quake).  However, if it was Doomed in that way, it would mean Carmack is staying at Meta, but if we reword the title to say unDoomed, it is strange and loses meaning too.  Anyway, Carmack's game is why that keyword was used in the title.

With that said, I think one-of-a-kind supermen like Steve Jobs are not a common thing.  To suggest Meta is "doomed" because of the loss of this one man is to suggest no one else could replace him.  In the current working environment at Meta, an amazing replacement person in the VR space probably wouldn't help.  They first need to get Zuckerberg and upper management to understand the reason why Carmack left, then address that so they can get their project back on track.

Zuckerberg needs to shake-up Meta akin to what Musk has done to Twitter, getting rid of the cruft in order to be laser focused on certain key objectives.  There's no telling whether Musk will ultimately succeed, but at least he's willing to brave horrific daily criticism in order to try new things.  Maybe the departure of Carmack will shake Zuckerberg enough to do a rethink.  And it's not that I am a huge FaceBook/Meta fan either.  I just feel we need intelligent competition in the VR space.  Heavy and expensive googles are not something I'd buy, but I realize that is a stepping stone to "lighter and cheaper" versions appearing in the future, assuming companies like Meta and Apple don't abandon these products entirely before they finally release the insanely great version that most people will eventually want.

  • iPhone 15 Ultra: What it may look like, and what to expect in 2023

Even with a titanium rim, a hard drop onto concrete would likely still mar a naked iPhone, which is why most people put a protective case on them, which in turn makes the camera bump less of an issue.

For the rare few people who do use the phone naked though, as long as the titanium edge isn't a shiny finger magnet like stainless steel, it should be a step up in terms of aesthetics.

  • Buy 10 Mac Studios, or this one Macintosh Color Classic

Definitely not worth even half the asking price, even if it was the far more usable Color Classic II.  It's always nice to have non-yellowed plastics, but not for $10K or $20k.  That sale is basically targeting wealthy vintage Mac fans who have more money than sense.

With that said, a more economically priced "used" Color Classic is a worthy vintage Mac to consider buying when you understand the upgrades that will need to be done to make it a fun machine to use.  Upgrading includes swapping out the painfully slow 16MHz 68030 motherboard with either one from an LC 550 (making it a CC II) or one from an LC 575 (making it into a MYSTIC).  The LC575 has a fast 33MHz 68040 that really makes it a fun machine.  But you can then take your LC 575 motherboard to the next level by swapping out the LC040 with an FPU version CPU, then use an overclocker.  My Mystic is currently running at 50MHz, which is only possible by using fast 60ns VRAM. Doing the VGA mod takes the resolution up to be compatible with most games.  Adding a second speaker gives you internal stereo, further enhancing vintage gaming.

You can add even more fun by installing an Apple IIe Card, giving a very authentic Apple II experience that is not an emulator.  Swap out the old spinner HDD with a SCSI to SD card solution like MacSD or BlueSCSI and a SCSI extension cable, then add a fun clicker device to simulate the head movement sound of a real hard drive.  Be sure to also get a FloppyEMU for convenient access to a host of vintage disk images from Macintosh Garden, as well as numerous Apple II images.  Then add a FlippyFloppy to give your CC Mystic an external floppy drive connector specifically made for the FloppyEMU, which has a toggle switch to allow continued use of the CC's internal floppy drive too.

You also need to swap out the electrolytic capacitors on the Analog Board and on whatever motherboard you intend to use.  You probably will also need to swap out a broken plastic gear inside the stock internal floppy drive.  You can even change the text on the front badge with a dry transfer sheet.

The amazing upgradability of the Color Classic makes it one of the most beloved models in the compact Mac series, on par with the SE/30.

I'll leave you with a 1993 Computer Chronicles video about the Color Classic (starts at 2:22)...

  • Tim Cook talks privacy, hiking, and investing for the long term

While not necessarily disagreeing with Cook, you CAN "save your way to prosperity" by INVESTING what you SAVE.  I would think most Americans are educated enough to know the difference between a bank account earning low interest and a mutual fund or stock account from a securities firm.  While choosing the right investment is important, so is putting your money in an investment and leaving it there, not selling when the market is down. And while you do need to ponder which bad investments to get rid if when they remain consistently bad, AAPL stock hasn't been one of those.

The think which has me curious is when a busy CEO like Cook even has time to do his hiking.  From the consumer end, the only hiking we see are in recent prices of Apple products. :-)

I'm important to have a good life/work balance, but I'd really like to know how much time is invested in Apple versus private time.  I had envisioned Cook to be a workaholic like Jobs, but it could be that Jobs was even more extreme than Cook.  Even so, Jobs did take time off to travel to Japan and many other places with his family.  So it's not like it was all work and no play.

  • Steve Jobs' Birkenstocks sold for $218,750

I am a huge Steve Jobs fan, but let's face it...  That's disgusting.  What's next, stained undergarments?  Both sellers and buyers of things things need to seek professional help.
