Putting the 27-inch i9 iMac thermal performance to the test
Completely unscientific but may be of interest Mac gamers.
I have set up a side by side;
Dell XPS 8930 PC which has 64 GB RAM, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700, with Nvidia GTX 1080 into a 4K Dell 27" monitor with Windows 10 Pro (a mid-level gaming desktop IMHO).
iMac 27" i9, 5K, 64 GB RAM with the Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB, booting into Windows 10 Pro.
Both can run Red Dead Redemption II and GTAV in 4K with quality maxed out at around 60 f.p.s. and the fans seem pretty much the same noise level... when they come on, which is intermittent on both. Neither get overly hot. Frankly, I can't tell any difference between them in use. The iMac can go up to 5K without any frame rate difference, the Dell is maxed out at Ultra-HD but visually both look amazing.
I am currently installing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on the iMac 5K, hoping that with run as well as the Dell. -
Imminent iMac launch rumors doubted by prominent leaker
iMac related but OT, I just tested out Turbo Boost Switcher, a free utility that turns off Intel's permanent Turbo Boost mode. This is now installed on my 27" iMac i9 5K and OMG what a difference.
This util is aimed at preventing MBPs and MBAs burning your lap and battery life lasting longer, and it does that, but my iMac loves it too. I see no performance change so far but it is cool and silent now. Link: https://www.rugarciap.com/turbo-boost-switcher-for-os-x/ -
Apple employees granted paid time off to vote in US election
GeorgeBMac said:American democracy is and has been under attack for years now:-- Russian disinformation campaigns-- Russian hacking campaigns-- Russian intrusions into voting systems-- Voter suppression efforts to block or discourage minorities and others from casting a vote-- Closing polling places in minority areas to make it harder to get to and then longer to wait.... And then we get to computerized gerrymandering where, even if you do get to vote, the vote is meaningless because your district has been gerrymandered to insure that only one party can ever win.It will take more than a few hours of paid leave to restore America to a democracy....But, weirdly, it is those most outraged at dictatorships in other countries who support the demise of democracy here in the U.S.
'A republic, Madison writes, is different from a democracy because its government is placed in the hands of delegates, and, as a result of this, it can be extended over a larger area. The idea is that, in a large republic, there will be more "fit characters" to choose from for each delegate.'

How Apple A-series chips stack up against Intel Macs
tht said:My biggest complaint with my work-issued 2018 MBP15 is that it runs hot when I have it connected to an external monitor and using the builtin keyboard. The top surface gets hot, heating up the keyboard! I really like the butterfly keyboard a lot more than the work-issue Macally one, and my work from home setup is bit too space constrained for an external keyboard anyways.
Hopefully they can have a 25 W SoC that keeps the keyboard and top case cool while providing better performance than Intel systems. Actually, I think they can put the logic board behind the display by the hinge if it is long skinny like the iPad Pros. That'll remove the primary source of heat from the keyboard and keep it nice and cool at all times. -
AirPods Pro 'Spatial Audio,' AirPods with auto-switching coming in iOS 14
