  • Nintendo's 'Super Mario Run' for iPhone requires a persistent internet connection for play

Not sure what is the biggest bummer in all of this.

    1) Not getting Super Mario Run because I cannot support their line of thinking.

    2) That the new hope I had for Nintendo actually coming around to what made sense is now not actually happening. They are still lost.

If they add an off-line mode, I will consider buying it. While I would love to play some good Nintendo titles on my iOS devices, I'm not the desperate one in this scenario. Have not had a new Nintendo game for over a decade. I can wait another 10 years if that is what it takes.

  • Supreme Court sides with Samsung over Apple, says payments shouldn't cover whole device profits [u]

The New American Way. No monopolies but.... defend the new world law -- the rich get richer. Someone in America is making money (Wall St). Wall St makes money, these DB tech companies make money. Should we as the consumer care? Apple loyalist since 1978 here. When Apple puts cheaper modems in high end iPhones to create more profit? That isn't IP, thats GREED. Think like the 1% and don't get emotional about money. The more you have, the more power you have. Oh I hate that I wrote all that especially after one cup of coffee but, I miss the old days.

If you are speaking about the Intel modems, than you can be assured they didn't do it for pure greed. They need to have a second source to control costs as well as to ensure adequate quantities for production if issues arrive with either vendor. It is likely also part of a plan to move even more of the modems to Intel going forward as their modems improve in capability. If you don't want the Intel modem, but a model that has the Qualcomm modem in it. Manufacturers do this stuff all the time, but even more so when they build larger unit volumes. The more you build, the more you need to do this sort of stuff. It isn't all about money, but it sure it all comes back to that.

  • Gooligan malware roots 1M Android phones in "largest Google account breach to date"

    gatorguy said:
A new strain of Android malware dubbed "Gooligan," thought to be "the largest Google account breach to date," is already in active circulation and three-fourths of the Android installed base is vulnerable. Once infected, devices give hackers access to the users' Gmail, Google Photos, Docs, Drive and other Google services accounts.
Inaccurate. In truth only around 8% of active Android devices are vulnerable. 92% of the older Android 4 and 5 smartphones are shielded from the exploits via Verify Apps which protects those users who intentionally bypass security settings to sideload apps from unofficial 3rd party sites. (This malware isn't in the Play Store) . If you read Checkpoints comments I believe they themselves pointed that out.

     EDIT: Yes they did.
"Check Point also notes that Google's "Verify Apps" technology has been updated to deal with apps using vulnerabilities like this. That's significant because, while it doesn't help devices that are already compromised, it roadblocks future installations on 92 percent of active Android devices, even without the need for firmware updates." "So as significant as a million compromised accounts sounds, this is also an example of Google's security strategy for app-based malware working as designed, blocking installations of affected apps across the vast majority of the ecosystem."
Anyone staying on Android deserves what they get at this point.

  • Apple scaling back iPhone 7 production as early demand fades - report

    How is this a surprise?

Why would people want to buy a phone with a 3 year old design?  I mean seriously. If someone holds their phone for 2 year, this phone will have a 5 year old design at the end of their ownership cycle.

To release the same phone design THREE YEARS IN A ROW is the height of Apple's arrogance. But that's Tim Cook's Apple for you. The amount of mistakes this idiot CEO has made is ridiculous.

I hope this iPhone 6SS sells like crap. Hope the stock tanks hard by early 2017. And the board/shareholders wake up and fire Tim Cook. With a competent CEO who actually cares about growing the business and brand (instead of going on some dumb ass social crusade) this stock would be at $200 by now.

it seems to me that the difference in physical appearance between the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 6 is in the same ballpark as the difference between the iPhone 5 and 4. True, there was a change in materials between the 4 and 5 and there really hasn't been a big change in materials since the 5, but I don't think the materials matter that much. Also, I actually think the iPhone 7 looks really good. I just don't think this is an issue.

If we define "design" more broadly than physical appearance (which I think we should), then the iPhone 7 has a lot going for it. The SOC is far and away the best on the market. The storage speed is phenomenal. The camera is very good -- whether it's the best depends on what you care about. Waterproofing is a good feature.

The biggest problem with the design is the omission of the 3.5 mm jack. I think that's really the crux of the bad sales. If AirPods had been released a year before the iPhone 7, and if they worked well and people loved them, then removing the 3.5 mm jack would have seemed like obviously the right thing to do. Instead, they remove the jack, promise these great new wireless earphones, but then delay them indefinitely. There were surveys showing interest in the AirPods running much higher than interest in the Apple Watch.

So my theory is that sales are weak because of the audio situation.
I can instantly tell the difference between an iPhone4 and iPhone5. Even from 10+ feet away.  I can't tell the difference between the front of an iPhone6, 6s, and 7. That is a huge problem. People want the latest and greatest. And they want people to know they have the latest.

The audio thing is an absolute disaster. Apple goes on a crusade to tell us that wireless is the future, yet the Airpods are MIA three months after the release of the iPhone7. Flatout ridiculous. If the Airpods are not ready they should have never deleted the headphone jack.
Apparently the visible dual camera and jet black treatment is enough for an awful lot of people. You sure come across as a whiny child. Also, this report says iPhone 7. I doubt Apple is cutting production on the 7 Plus since they have not even met demand yet. So Apple being surprised by the product mix going more to the Plus is not a bad thing. It means their ASP will be even higher.

  • Apple AirPort Extreme claims top marks in consumer-grade wireless router survey

    grangerfx said:
Letting the news get out that the entire development staff for the Airport routers have been reassigned without putting out an official statement on the matter is the first sign of serious problems in Apple's management. How do you create a smart AI based home hub that does not have at its core a completely secure network router? To do a good job of routing packets to VOIP or NetFlix streaming requires deep network packet sniffing on the local network and that requires very strong encryption on the router. Only a router can sense that there are insecure devices on the network such as Chinese IP cameras and firewall them. This is a disaster for local network security. Apple needs to tell its millions of customers how they are now supposed to secure their home networks. Who else but Apple would you trust with your most private data?
First of all there is no real confirmation that this happened in a permanent manner is there? All hands on deck for another product launch doesn't mean they stay there. Also, could be that maybe they will turn the AppleTV into the base station? It is already the HomeKit Hub, why not be the network hub too? They are still selling the airports, so I won't believe it until I see the results with discontinued products and no replacement. I would expect any real exit from a segment like wireless base stations (and backup with time capsule) to be like what they did with displays by showcasing a partnership with a particular vendor that they have worked with to ensure a good experience with their products. Since they have done neither of those things we should wait to see.
