  • Apple's record $83.4B Q4 misses Wall Street expectations

30% YoY growth and this “misses” expectations?

what the fuck has this world come to.
It’s Apple, what more can anyone say? According to Wall Street the company is a failure. I had to order my financial advisor to put some AAPL in my portfolio. He did so reluctantly.
My 401k holdings are about the same value as my AAPL stock.  The AAPL stock was purchased between 2003 and 2008 with an initial investment of ~15K.  On average I have put in 15K per year into my 401K since 2002.  Whilst the 401K has done okay it pales into insignificance compared to the performance of AAPL.
Of course there has been ups and downs but the same can be said for my 401K funds.  If I had listened to my financial advisors I would have half of the value in my retirement fund.
Sure it is risky to have a lot in one stock but since it really only cost me 15K it has been worth the risk.  Also I know Apple's performance and stability very well and whilst the market has knee jerk reactions, I have yet to see any signs that Apple is faltering in their approach.  If anything, innovations like AppleSilicon, continuing iPhone success, growth of the services business and wearables makes me more bullish than ever.

  • Pre-launch iPod prototype revealed with oversized plastic enclosure

Imagine the battery life the iPod could have had if they had kept with that form factor! :open_mouth:

It's a good way to get testing done without revealing how the final unit would look like.

When Apple came out with iTunes, I remember thinking wouldn't it be great if a you could put a hard drive in a music player.  Then a year later Apple comes out with the iPod.  I bought the 3rd gen when the size increased to hold my library and the price came down enough for me to

  • Compared: New AirPods versus AirPods Pro

The new AirPods are sweat proof -- and that's good.
But, in my experience, that's not good enough:  I run with my AirPods Pros and have had trouble with charging twice now such that the case had to be replaced.   And, I think I finally figured it out:

Sweat clinging to the Airpod corrodes the contacts at the bottom of the case and they are unable to charge.  While there is no proof that that is the cause, and Apple has never suggested that it is (they simply replace the case), it seems it is the most likely cause.

So now I dry each AirPod before returning it to the case
I never had a problem with the case charging with the 2nd gen AirPod.  But occasionally do clean the contacts with an Q-tip to remove accumulated dirt etc.  Maybe with the AirPodPro having a shorter leg liquid can drain down from the ear piece or maybe accumulated from the rubber tip.  Seems pretty simple to wipe it dry.
As far a germs go, the plastic is a poor medium for them to grow.  The speaker section would be the worst area and again a Q-tip is handy for cleaning out that area.  I did that  a few weeks ago and there was a ton of material there (mostly ear wax etc).
Whilst ANC and transparency is good to have, the only time I use that is when on a plane.  I have a Bose headset for that which lasts for 10 hours and can also connect by bluetooth and wired for connecting to the plane's entertainment system.

So it will be a new pair of AirPods 3 for me.  Been waiting a while for this.

  • New MacBook Pros are coming Oct. 18 and the design remains a mystery

Generally Apple perform internally upgrades in one release cycle and then the cosmetic look and feel in the next.  Given that the Silicon upgrade is significant, I doubt that the form factor will be similar.  The rumors have already talked about MagSafe, HDMI, and SD slots in addition to the USB-C ports.  Personally I like the USB-C simplicity for the current MacBookPro, especially as hubs can offer everything you need in terms of connectivity.  The Touch Bar is neat but I rarely use is except for controlling brightness and sound.  Touch ID was a big win for me when I got this machine.
For me, I will take whatever comes out as a 16 inch MBP.  I've bought a new machine every 4-5 years and they have been superb. I still have a 2012 rMBP that I use as a media server (with its own built in battery backup) and it is still running good.  Paid for a battery replacement after 4 years and got a free screen replacement at the same time.
Apple laptops are rock solid and last for years.  This machine will become my new media server once I get the M1 16 inch.  I also have to buy one for my wife who has been waiting a year for a new MBP.  I've been holding back because the M1 will be a significant upgrade and well worth the wait.

  • Apple's Mac continues to grow in supply-constrained PC market

Back in the early 2000’s Apple was barely selling a million Macs a year. Whilst the Mac is no longer the biggest part of apple’s portfolio, it is still an impressive gain over the last 20 years.
