  • Apple expanding child safety features across iMessage, Siri, iCloud Photos

I understand that Apple are trying to do a good thing here but this really goes against the grain as far as privacy is concerned.
What also worries me is the this can be used by people to bribe or blackmail.
There a plenty of ways that people inadvertently download files etc. What if a banned image is slipped in to your photo library without your knowledge.  The next thing you know is the police are knocking on your door.  This is way worse that having your PC held for ransom. It’s potentially your life that could be ruined simply because you made a mistake download a file you shouldn’t have.
Just imagine getting hit by a ransom ware that threatens to place child pornography on your computer.  There are plenty of people who will panic and do the wrong thing by paying up instead of going to the police.  This type of blackmail only has to work a small fraction of the time to be highly profitable.

There has to be another way to track the trafficking of this type of imagery as it is being distributed.  I don’t think looking a people’s private content is the right way to do it.  It is open to too much risk for hacking and could easily ruin many innocent people’s lives.

Apple could face a very severe backlash on this.

  • Apple Silicon transition may hit its two-year target with 2022 Mac Pro

The longer they’re leaving it, the more the competition has stepped up. The buying public can’t see beyond marketing specs so genuine advantages are already mitigated. Single-core performance has been matched by Intel 11th gen i7/i9 so it’ll be interesting to see how much Apple has left in the tank.
Apple silicon is a paradigm shift for processors.  The speed advantages and the headroom for growth are massive and Intel won't be able to keep up.  This is just the beginning for Silicon Macs.

Intel will be able to survive because Windows is not going anywhere and non-Apple ARM chips are way behind Apple. Eventually they will get better and unless Intel can learn to develop ARM chips successful they will be left behind.

Apple should augment its USB-C & MagSafe connectors with optical transceivers. Surely this is tapping the terabit by now?
It's hard enough trying to get USBc to be accepted by everyone.  Last thing we need is for Apple to jump ship and use a new connector.  There are barely any external USB4/Thunderbolt devices in use, and even then... not much saturates the 40gb/s bandwidth.  When 80gb/s comes around, even less with take up that much.

Of course, those using multiple Apple 6K monitors will maybe tap it, but those are the exceptions to the rule.

Either way, I'm pretty excited to see that day come.  80gb/s (10GB/s) is pretty amazing.
I'm hoping the TB5 format will be backwards compatible with USB-C.  It's the perfect connector for me and I would like Apple to use it for the iPhone and other devices in addition to the iPad and Mac.

  • M1 MacBook owners complain about easily cracked screens

One of the reasons why I buy Apple products is because of their quality, customer service and longevity.  I am typing this on a 2016 MBP.  The keyboard issue was repaired free of charge several years ago.  I replaced the battery at the same time.  Last year I drop it on concrete; there are dents in the corner of the main body and the top that houses the screen.  No cracks or weird behavior.  The machine is still as fast as when I bought it 5 years ago.
My previous 2012 MBP is still going strong.  After 4 years, I changed out the battery and Apple did a screen replacement for free.

Compared to the windows laptops I use at work, the Apple units are far superior.  A work laptop will last 2 years on average, massively slow down over time and is made from plastic.

Often Apple will do the repair for free if you take it to the Apple Store.  I had a situation that my dog bit through the charging cable on an MBP charger.  I went to the store to buy a replacement and was directed to one of the support staff. They gave me a new charger for free even though it was obvious this was not a technical issue.  One of the things I love about Apple.

If the incident rate starts increasing it could be a manufacturing issue and Apple will issue a replacement program.  My only criticism of Apple is that it take some time for them to get to that stage and people end up paying for repairs that later are done for free.
