  • Samsung suspends production of Galaxy Note 7, AT&T and T-Mobile stop offering replacements

A professional and responsible company recalls a dangerous product, Samsung has really managed to let others make that decision for them after weeks of agony. I hope every consumer on the planet has these scumbags on the shitlist now. #aWallHuggerYesButAtLeastNotOnFire

  • Google Pixel revealed by resellers, shows remarkable similarity to iPhone design

I'm curious why all these POS brands can release super HD OLED screens and Apple can't?
Putting in even more resolution than the eye can resolve only wastes battery. That OLED thing may be a matter of taste, but I have yet to see an OLED screen on a mobile device that is not oversaturated and fake-looking. No idea if this is a technical issue, or just lack of proper calibration ex factory. But since I can't really calibrate a mobile myself... what's the difference? And judging by the Apple Watch (pre first generation)... OLED does not really help with visibility in daylight either. The screen on the new 7 Plus is the best I have ever seen on a mobile device. It has no peers. No idea why you want worse?

  • Back in black: iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus mega review

Picked up the (just) black 7 Plus 256 GB yesterday (128 GB would have been enough, but weren't available) and widely agree with this review so far. New leather cases are much better than the old models, cameras are superb, stereo sound is great for watching some video. Getting used to the new home non-button will take me some time though. It is not bad at all, but totally different.

(This whole headphone jack brouhaha is a frigging non-issue though. Everybody sleeps one or two hours, totally possible to charge the phone without listening to music at the same time.)

  • Inside Apple's 2016 MacBook Pro: USB-C and Thunderbolt 3

The common conception that Apple is behind on that (or on laptop upgrades in general) is less than half true, really. I do have one of the Dell XPS 15 laptops with USB-C/TB3 (mainly got it to give my MS System Center / MCSE lectures, since Apple did not sell anything portable capable of supporting 32 GBs of RAM). Yes, the machine has a 6th generation quad-core i7 and the newest in ports. But in real life they needed something like 8 months to make the UEFI and drivers work somewhat, almost the same amount of time to deliver the needed peripherals and adapters, it still does not drive 5k displays and driving two external UHD displays requires a $350 dock, some things do still work randomly today (like wake from sleep in general and waking up external displays in particular). And... in real life use this 6th gen CPU does not feel much faster than my 2012 retina MBP while lasting about half as long on a full charge... Add to that Windows 10s still more than glaring power management, hibernation, font rendering and high DPI scaling issues... and I still would not prefer this piece of junk over my 4 year old MBP for any other task. Maybe Apple simply decided to not even go there until Intel has worked out the most glaring issues... which can't be said even today.

  • Apple debuts Arabic, British English and Italian Smart Keyboard layouts

    still no German keyboard?
How is anyone seriously supposed to use that?
If this ought to be a very bad joke, it's not funny anymore.
Well, FWIW, if you order the 12.9" Smart Keyboard in the German store, you can select a "Deutsch" layout, and it ships in 2 days. Anyhow, I am writing in German on the US keyboard since the device was released, and it is not a huge problem. I simply set up TextExpander replacements for a$, u$, s$ etc. to be replaced with ä, ü, ß etc. and made the TE keyboard the default. Took approx. half a day to get that into muscle memory. You only have to avoid these characters in passwords, since third-party on screen keyboards will not work for them. But I never did that anyhow, since accessing accounts when e.g. in different countries and having no own keyboard becomes extremely difficult.
