  • HomeKit architecture upgrade expected to return in iOS 16.4

I didn't have any issues with 16.2, but in the interim I have received and installed two Meross MSS115 Smart Plugs with Matter. I'll be curious to see what happens since these brand new products have not been very easy to install. Right out of the box they would not show up on the Meross app or Home App. After rebooting everything in the house I eventually got them installed, only to see them listed as "not responding" a few hours later. More fiddling, uninstalling, rebooting ad infinitum and finally they are working and show up correctly. How long this will last and how the looming 16.4 update will impact them is to be determined I guess. Homekit in general, does not impress.

  • New HomePod still leaves rings on finished wood surfaces

Not all silicone formulations do this. It's likely that originally Apple chose the material for it's specific vibration damping properties and all subsequent acoustic design and engineering was done using the chosen silicone material. After the fact, it is discovered it reacts with certain finishes. Yes, Apple could choose a new non-reactive material, which would most likely have different damping properties. They then would have to redo a lot of previous work to accommodate the new properties effects throughout the acoustic system. Of course, this is a new product and Apple already knew the previously used material had surface finish reaction issues. A new Homepod, with new configurations, microphones, drivers etc. should have presented an opportunity for Apple to make the change in damping material - and they didn't.
    Gotta wonder why.

  • Satechi's new Pro Hub Slim adds seven ports to MacBooks

    netrox said:
This is why I think MacBooks shouldn't have any ports but USB-Cs. USB-Cs are capable of outputting all kinds of devices with a simple dongle.

Apple ignored the fundamental point of minimalism and caved in to unwarranted criticisms about missing ports (HDMI, MagSafe, etc)

Now, the new MBs look horrible with unsightly ports.

I can see it leaving the SD slot alone as it does have a clean slit opening but the design of HDMI port is very jarring and deserves to be banished. The MagSafe port is unsightly too. Why???? There are USB devices that can act as MagSafe and if they really need that, they can add it but for most people, they don't need it.
No, they don't look "horrible". They look like a computer people use without having to futz around with docks and dongles.
Sheesh the silly, unimportant things people choose to criticize.

  • Apple gearing up to re-release revamped HomeKit architecture

Since 16.3 is already out, when will we see this Homekit update?

  • Apple upgrades 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro, M2 Max

Nice updates. I've bought MBPs for many years and my 2017 15" is getting long in the tooth. And yes the keybaord has been replaced, along with a swollen battery. However, with the innate speed and power of M silicon, I feel that it's time for a 15" M2 Macbook. I no longer need all the Pro features or M2 Pro/Max chips. I do however, want the larger screen as that is my preference. As an old person with aging eyes, the real estate is appreciated. The question is would Apple do this, or would it eat into MBP sales too much? My opinion is that an M2 Macbook would be a big seller and any MBP cannibalization would be offset by those sales.
