  • New York and San Antonio cops differ on tracking stolen cars with Airtags

I believe it is in the interest of the police to encourage AirTag use. They get credit for solving car thefts without having to doing the traditional police work it would take to track down the thieves.
What makes you think the police actively try to solve car thefts?   They don’t, at least not in NYC.   If they stop a car for other reasons, they’ll run the plates to check if it’s stolen (or if you have unpaid tickets), but that’s all they do.

Years ago, when my car was stolen, the police insinuated that I must have forgotten where I parked it.  A few years before that when my daughter’s car was stolen, the cops came over and were very nice, but they said the chances of recovering the car were near zero.

I thought we could track it to a certain extent via the EZPass, but it wasn’t used. The thieves must have been smart enough to dump it.

  • Apple upgrades 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro, M2 Max

So just a speed/spec bump with no physical changes or new features? My 16-inch MBP M1 Max is still near the top.

Although, I'll admit. I have color-matched MagSafe charging cable envy on the new models.

I’ve never understood why people expect more from consecutively released models.   Do you buy a new car EVERY year?   If you already have an M1, it’s not really intended for you.   It’s intended for people like me who are using a much older Mac, in my case a late 2016 with a bunch of broken keys and WiFi that only works intermittently.

  • Epic CEO will fight Apple to the bitter end over App Store control

    jblongz said:
II don't agree with the way Epic Games started this, but I do feel their sentiment.  Taking 30% of someone's business in order to sell on their platform is like doing the same in order to make a MacOS or Windows 11 app.  It does seem unfair.
Back in the physical software days, most developers/publishers had to get distribution via a company like Ingram Micro-D.    Ingram took up to 52% of list price.    30%, which includes credit card fees and risk is a freaking bargain, IMO.   There's also a lot of cost in operating one's own e-commerce site.

Having said that, due to pressure from various governments, Apple is probably going to have to compromise.   They could take a lower percentage on in-app sales, as long as there's some minimum initial fee and they could allow selling outside of the App Store as long as the app is still submitted for a technical review for which Apple gets a fee.   Also, if you sell outside of the App Store, then you have to pay for Apple's development tools and documentation, which are currently free.

  • New Apple Car rumor suggests 2026 debut at less than $100,000

Wow. Under $100,000.  What a bargain.   The price of EV’s has fallen each year and there are great cars for less than half that price from Hyundai and others.

If Apple release a close to $100,000 car, IMO, that’s really going to hurt their brand and “supersize” the notion that there’s an Apple Tax and that Apple only produces products for the rich and elite.

How many cars would they sell a year at that price?  Probably under 5000.  Hardly seems worth it.

  • Find My misfire leads to SWAT raid on grandmother

    ...location of a stolen iPhone.

A SWAT raid on a home for "a" (in the singular) iPhone?  That sounds like a rather enormous waste of tax dollars to me.  I would say that even if the number was 9 iPhones.  Maybe if it was 50 or 100, then I can understand a SWAT raid.  But for one?

In addition to that SWAT raid tax dollar waste, you then have the waste of having to pay to compensate the lady for all the broken items, including collectable dolls, some of which may not be so easy to replace.  And now you also have a lawsuit filed as well.

The police issue an apology (but refuse to pay for repairs) and expect that to end that particular case so they can then move on to the next SWAT raid, which could also be a mistake.

All the while, this poor lady is left with financial loss and with fear about what may next come through her door.

    All over a SINGLE iPhone.

    Madness.  Utter madness.
Not all over a single iPhone… stolen vehicle, 6 firearms, a drone and $6k on cash
Was the stolen vehicle found on the property?   Nope.
Why did the police have to break in?  Why couldn't they walk up to the door and investigate?    Or announce over a loudspeaker from the outside that the person inside must come out.  Then enter the home and re-ping the phone.

Because they're a bunch off macho, unprofessional shits and it's so much more fun to break things.

I hope she wins her case big time.
