  • New MacBook Pro with M1 Max processor will ditch Touch Bar, adopt MagSafe

Your comment about projectors is spot on as well. I have yet to see a conference room with a USB C connection but without exception they all have HDMI cables.
Several rooms I used to routinely go to still only had VGA (!)
Thankfully I no longer go into the office.  Still do visit customers, though so...

but honestly I could do without the “tough love”
One of the biggest downside of being an Apple fan, that's for sure

  • New MacBook Pros are coming Oct. 18 and the design remains a mystery

Sure, but Apple also didn't do the things you said they did "single handedly".
Well no one else turned them into actual shipping products.

USB was introduced by Intel years before the iMac, but Apple single handedly created the entire USB ecosystem with the candy colored iMacs and the enthusiasm around them.

We'd still be stuck on serial and parallel ports if solely left to the traditions of the PC world.

Do you seriously think USB-C would look anything like it did had Apple not pushed lightning?  Apple is on the USB design committees and had been pushing them for years to include what I consider the two greatest features of lightning - the small size and the universal nature of the connection - no matter how you insert it, it just works.  USB-A and all the mini/micro variants up to USB C were keyed/directional - and not in obvious ways.  Talk about a PITA.

So yeah, there are significant portions of the industry that would really suck if it hadn't been for Apple pushing for more than the "least common denominator" approach.

The Powerbook 100 was co-designed with Sony.
Yet Sony didn't come out with the design by themselves, especially before Apple.  Indeed I did some digging and the earliest I find a Sony branded laptop was the Vaio launch in 1996 - which seems implausible to me since the PB 100 debuted in 1991.   If those are accurate Sony didn't have their own laptops until five years (!) later.

Also Apple and Sony had a long partnership starting with the 3.5 in Sony floppies since Apple was their biggest user for a long time.

Ha - that made me think of one of my favorite stories on folklore.org: https://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Hide_Under_This_Desk.txt

  • Siri on Ecobee SmartThermostat review: Apple's smart assistant invades your home

I *have* that giant hole in my wall from the previous person who installed the thermostat. The hole showed with just the thermostat mounted so I had to use the skirt. I agree, doesn’t look as good but you dont need it if the hole is small enough.
I believe the Ecobee plate is paintable, like the Nest plate.  I did paint the Nest plate to match the wall color and it made a significant difference, helping it blend in.  If you happen to have some of your wall paint around it's well worth it.  Reminds me - need to paint the Ecobee plate to help it disappear!
