These web apps are different. There's a new technology that runs on all browsers, yes including Safari, called WebAssembly (WASM). It does not require a plugin, the apps run at close to native apps and they are being used today, they're called PWAs. Web apps have been around since the Internet was invented and they've not done anything since. The biggest improvement they have had is the introduction of service workers, and they still cannot compete with something running on the machine, specifically built for the mahine they are running on.
