  • iOS 12 users must unlock their iPhones every hour to maintain USB connections

The cat and mouse game begins. The government is now treated like jailbreakers.

Does this break carplay, since you could be driving more than hour and be hooked up to the car via lightning port. Imagine your driving and your navigation stopped since the lightning port just shut off.
I suspect that a continuous connection is allowed like with carplay, but as soon as you unplugged it from the car (like at a gas station), you'd have to unlock it again before plugging it back in.

  • Apple Watch's Walkie-Talkie feature in watchOS 5 uses FaceTime Audio technology

I don't really understand what advantage this has over FaceTime Audio, especially if it's using the same underlying technology.

Is it just a retro rebranding of FaceTime Audio for Apple Watch?
I think there's two things: First, the other person doesn't have to "answer" the call, which seems odd to me because there are a lot of situations where I don't want my watch to just start talking.

The second difference is that you have a connection to the other person without actually being in a conversation. This seems more useful to me. Sometimes you need to communicate when you're meeting other people or coordinating something, but you don't want to constantly be talking. For example, let's say I'm at an amusement park and I have friends around the park. I could push to talk, and say, "I'm going to grab some food with Owen, then we're going to the Power Tower." And they could just say back, "We're still on the slides, but we'll meet you later." Who knows how well this will actually work, but I can see myself using it.

I think I'd like some way to accept a session say for the next 1, 3, 6 hours or the whole day. Otherwise, I'd be nervous about getting a voice on my watch while I'm in a meeting or in a quiet place.

  • Amazon Echo recorded household audio, sent it to random contact [u]

Wow. I'd love to hear how this bug got into the system. I'd like to hear more about exactly what happened. What it an audio snippet or a transcription? How long was the recording? It seems like they sent a recording a "conversation," rather than just something that Alexa thought was a command.

  • iPhone 7 Plus tops smartphone consumer satisfaction survey

All these numbers are pretty close to each other. In fact, most of them are probably within the statistical margin of error, which means that they really don't mean much, except that people really like Apple and Samsung phones.

  • Inside Consumer Reports: Controversies surrounding the MacBook Pro and HomePod

The trouble with Consumer Reports is that they believe adding up all the numbers for a bunch of discrete tests actually tells you how good a product is. They don't have any Apple bias, except that Apple products tend to be more about the experience than the specifications.
