Jony Ive talks about minimalism, taste, and Apple's design group
flydog said:Your premise makes sense, but you gave the worst example possible to support it. It's like arguing against a wall switch performing both on and off functions, and in favor of separate on and off switches.
The tech freaks always criticised Jony Ive's obsession with minimalism. Without it, the World would be a far worse place.
I usually don't allow any Microsoft software on my Mac, put it down to experience, but they bought the lovely, simple and uber-useful 'To Do' app. Now it is getting exponentially complicated and buggy and needs updates every couple of days - typical Microsoft! This would be the whole World without Jony Ive and Steve Jobs. -
A Mac mini can be made portable for about three times the cost of a MacBook Air
The beauty of the MacBook Air is that it is totally silent, has a decent display and built-in great keyboard, the battery means you don't need a UPS in the event of a power cut and it can drive huge external display. I use mine as my desktop computer most of the time with wireless Magic Keyboard and Trackpad but it also travels very lightly with me alone.
I have had a couple of Mac Minis over the years but it was, and still is, the cheapest way to get a Mac, aimed firmly at switchers.
Just as flat-screen vs. CRT monitors halved the size of investment banking dealing rooms, the silence of the MBA means recording studios no longer need a separate 'control booth'. Silence is Golden. -

How and where Trump's new tariffs affect Apple
Trump's tariffs only affect goods imported in to the USA. Retaliatory tariffs will affect goods exported from the USA. The bulk of Apple's sales are not in the USA and almost all of its manufacturing is outside the USA. Hence most of Apple's business will be unaffected.
Trump has created an incentive to manufacture in the USA for domestic consumption but also an incentive to manufacture outside the USA for sales in the rest of the World. As manufacturing costs are higher in the USA, the net effect is likely to be higher prices but only in the USA.
