  • How Apple Silicon Macs can supercharge computing in the 2020s

This article paints a too rosy picture of the transition. The fact of the matter is that moving away from x86 will end Mac’s “best of both worlds” status. That means no more running Windows software.
In over 20 years and Thousands of both Mac & Windows Users I have serviced, I have yet to meet ONE person who wants or needs to run Windows on a Mac. It's two separate Worlds plain and simple. Anyone who thinks otherwise is FUBAR.
Allow me to introduce myself to you then! I use both on a MBP as it runs legacy software that can only run on a PC. Will this change? Maybe but not righty now. Also who wants the headache of rushing to switch? Unless you run Office and Adobe products and mainly use a browser or want iPad apps on a Mac then switch away. If not, hold off till you absolutely have to switch. That said I have held off on a new intel Mac or PC till the future is clearer like can I run Windows under Parallels.

Edit: @macuserosu beat me too it! Cue Rolling Stones, Sympathy.

I am assuming things won’t change from the way it works now on Intel Macs, but curious if anyone knows definitively if users will only be allowed to download software through the Apple App Store for Apple SI Macs (like iOS apps work) or if users will be able to download apps directly from vendor websites, external drives etc.

I wondered where all the armchair lawyers were and was not disappointed to find them here! ߘ᦬t;br> (An Apple site that does not support Apple’s iPhone emoji’s?)

In summing up the new models, iFixit suggests Apple has made "some serious design compromises" to add 5G components
This gives another example of why it makes sense to wait a year unless you absolutely need to upgrade.

5G adds cost to the device, adds cost to your cell phone plan, adds compromises to the phone and doesn’t really give you any useful functionality over 4G.

It seems reasonable to require a lot of work if users want to replace a broken glass back, since almost anybody would just slap a case on and forget all about it.
One doesn’t need to be able to swap a battery in a few seconds like one would for a drill, but it should be replaceable without an inordinate amount of effort and/or potentially damaging the device to get the old battery out (both of which we’ve seen in the past.)
Yes, remember the good old days when you dropped your phone and the back plate and battery flew off in different directions. It was always fun trying to retrieve them in crowded spaces like airports and hope no one stepped it and broke it.
Right! Unlike now where you can find all the pieces but can’t just snap them together. And have to call insurance or send in to an Apple store and get a replacement. Not to mention backing it all up as they will probably send you a refurbished phone. I mean the inconvenience of having to pick up the battery and cover AND click it back all by yourself with NO support is a staggering inconvenience we should never have to go back to.

That’s it China.  Just keep going.  Just keep giving Apple more reasons to diversify manufacturing out of your country.  The sooner, the better.  And good riddance.

The Chinese are the ones who are in a position to say good riddance to Apple and not the other way around as you claim.

You don't know too much about business, do you?
Apple is the smartest, most valuable company on Earth.  China has a ruthless, repressive, totalitarian, imperial government and their society has no regard for pluralism or diversity in any political or cultural aspect of its society.  Its leaders are utterly unaccountable to the people they supposedly serve.  Chinese "business" is all about the Communist Party in corrupt sweetheart deals with ruthless, robber-baron, nepotistic capitalists.  Chinese despise foreigners at home and treat hosts in other countries like garbage. I'd gladly pay a couple dollars more for a phone than have any piece of it made in China.
    Well said!
