  • Apple TV app stops video rentals & purchases on Android TV, Google TV

Like the App Store, Google charges a 30% commission fee on in-app purchases for apps running on its platforms, including Android TV and Google TV. It is plausible that Apple would be subject to such a fee, or a discounted rate if one was agreed with through Google, for content sold through the Apple TV app.

A key difference is that all other movie and TV purchase and rental platforms - Google, Amazon, Disney, Vudu, FandangoNOW, RedBox, Microsoft etc. allow you to purchase and rent movies and TV shows through the browser. Apple is the only one that forces you to own their hardware - a MacBook, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV or (for as long as they are still being made) iPod - in order to purchase or rent TV shows. There is absolutely no technical reason for not having a web storefront as literally everyone else has offered it from day one and in some cases for approaching 15 years.

Don't get all up-in-arms, I am not saying that Apple is doing anything illegal or unethical here. After all, plenty of alternatives - the 7 listed above and more - do exist. And I would propose that the primary reason for Apple TV on a Google TV device anyway is to watch Ted Lasso. I am just pointing out that the result of avoiding the 30% means that one is now required to own Apple hardware to purchase Apple content, a requirement that other platform providers do not impose.
One correction. Apple allows to buy from one more non-Apple platform. You can rent or buy using iTunes (it is still there) on Windows based PC. Too bad that it does not work on Linux desktops, but one can run VirtualBox PC emulator on Linux with Windows 11 and iTunes installed (I do that).

  • Amazon Prime raising annual subscription to $139

Not surprising, but fortunately it’s very easy for everyone who subscribes to Amazon Prime to do the math and determine whether it’s worth it for them. For a lot of folks the determination can be made based on delivery costs alone. The value of the extra stuff like photos, music, and video only enter the equation if you’re not getting all of the value/ROI from the delivery service.

I recognize this is a narrowly focused perspective based on personal economics alone. Like any system there are a number of macro level implications and second order effects to a service like this that makes it so incredibly easy have hard goods ordered on a whim delivered extremely quickly to your door with little to no regard to the true cost of the delivery service.

A quick survey of the number of Amazon vehicles on the road and coursing through neighborhoods nearly all of the time, not to mention the vast tracts of land devoted to fulfillment centers and warehouses, some of which are built on the graves of dead malls and retail stores driven out of business because they could not compete against online retail, and the mountains of cardboard waste (hopefully everyone recycles?) paints a truer cost picture that’s a little harder to do the math on.

The “eye” is back … staring straight at me. Ugh.
Does Apple offer food shopping with any service? Amazon Prime does and that was saver during Covid sickness, isolation and lockdowns. You get your bags of food next to your doors - not just entertainment on your favorite device. You can survive without entertainment - not so without food. Also this is very convenient  in times when we work from home and do not want to leave home for shopping (for many reasons). Add to that, that many devices including Samsung and Apple you can buy from Amazon with overnight (almost) delivery for free (Prime gives you free delivery on most of Amazon sold products and it is delivered even on weekends). So how do you plan to compare only narrow service from Apple with fractional part of Amazon Prime service that offers far more?

I have a 27" iMac from 2020 that seems to have lost any trace of the ethernet network connection. It ran smoothly initially then was lost I believe when I upgraded to OS Monterrey. I've spent a lot of time with Apple support and the final solution was to bring it in for repair, which I haven't done yet. I'm hoping this update will fix it but am not holding my breath.  I'm fine using wifi but it is annoying. Anybody else having this issue?
Have you tried down grading via restore?
And why? 2020 Apple computer is relatively new and usually supported for 5 years with new systems. If he downgrades then he goes to older systems with limted time support. This is not a solution, but temporary workaround for relatively new computer. is this how Apple "fixes" work now?

  • Samsung's Galaxy S22 Unpacked event is on February 9

Not sure why this is here
Because of competition. So when there is something new some ignorant lovers of Apple do not claim some innovations are only contributed by Apple. It is smart to watch competition. Traditionally both companies compete and bring something new at about the same time.

A bunch of shi**y devices horribly based on Apple patents and knockoff Apple devices will be shown. Like last year and the year before.

    -My prediction.
You seem to be misinformed. Actually many Apple patents belong to Softbank (owner of my previous employer) which includes ARM patents (apple is investor in Softbank if you did not know that). Also many inventions came to Apple AFTER Android devices. I suggest reading a bit about mobile history. I still use 2018 LG G7 Android phone that had far better screen and sound (Quad DAC) than any Apple mobile device until 2019-2020 when Apple released new phones. So do not be so sure about Samsung as well. They came up with things that Apple never came up or came up only later, but obviously you are lacking this knowledge. Sure Apple came with their own, but it is not like Apple was followed only.

Next thing we will learn from you that Apple came up with idea of folding mobile phone. Well guess what. Samsung released it already a year ago or so. And LG had that idea as well, but they came up with different kind of "folding" and it was on the market long time ago.
