  • Apple HR head Denise Young Smith takes up new role as VP for 'Inclusion and Diversity'

It should be recognized that true diversity in this area arises from equal opportunity...and equal educational opportunity. The poor and disadvantaged don't have that equal educational opportunity to give them the background they need to become qualified.

If Apple and other big technology companies are truly interested in this situation improving, they should pour money into school funding. Offer scholarships for kids that need it. Develop curriculum and make it accessible to all (which Apple is doing with Swift Playgrounds).

  • 'Fair Repair Act' proposal in New York under fire by Apple lobbyists

I call this the "Louis Rossmann Bill". He's a popular YouTuber doing electronics repair who bashes Apple and works on Apple products, but refuses to get certified.

My stance is that electronics solder reworking, auto repair, etc. are skills easily teachable in CTE programs. People coming out of the military or straight out of high school can all pick it up. This is an important fight in the battle against planned obsolescence.

That being said, I get the point with qualified individuals performing work. However, this is stuff that's out of warranty, out of warranty scope, or that Apple is charging an arm and a leg for a complete logic board replacement when it's a faulty capacitor.

  • Apple reveals plans for future Washington D.C. Carnegie Library store

Probably not a popular sentiment, and I'm sure I'm misunderstanding something, but...

The mention of turning Carnegie's philanthropic donation into a "massive retail presence" doesn't sit well with me. I appreciate that Apple is restoring the building, but this building should be used exclusively for the public good and not for someone's profit.

I don't blame Apple, I blame poor city planning that let this resource slip away. And it's not just Washington DC, this has happened at Carnegie library buildings all over the country.

  • CEO Tim Cook's compensation cut by $1.5M following Apple's 2016 decline in sales

I don't understand how they let the Mac lineup get in the state it's in.

With their money they could easily have upgraded the line up with new internals whilst they finished off any innovations that they wanted to roll out.

    Piss poor management, very unusual.
I'm not understanding why they are pouring so much R&D into niche products like the Apple Watch and Touch Bar. The vast majority of us want affordable computing and progressive refinements and bug fixes.

  • Touch Bar keyboards, 'modest' Mac upgrades on Apple's slate for 2017

I posted this in another thread but since that one was late and will get buried...

I hate that type of rubbish that Cook is spouting.

How difficult is it to simply come out with a model update regularly that has a faster processor, new graphics card, and maybe new ports (Thunderbolt 3, USB-C, etc).? Apple itself is probably making it harder to do this by inherently making designs non-upgradable.

The main problem is Apple thinks they need to reinvent the wheel every time they come out with a desktop. The cylinder Mac Pro is a perfect example...it's more about visual aesthetic then anything else. They probably spent years refining the cylinder. The Mac mini is the Cube concept refined to it's maximum (minus any thought for upgradability or expandability).

Then to see their laptop line adopt a gimmick like the Touch Bar...and remove all ports except USB-C...it really makes me wonder what they are thinking. I like Apple products, and they will sell millions of units regardless of what I think, but it's still frustrating.
