  • New iOS 16 Developer Mode may be preview of third-party app store toggle

    I want, no DEMAND, that this Developer Mode setting include a way for the iPhone operator/owner to lock out the ability for it to be changed by anyone except the iPhone user as defined in iCloud settings. Further, I want to make sure the iCloud settings require either a password, passkey or something no person other than the logged in user has access to. I CHOOSE to only use the Apple App Store and since it's my device with my personal information on it, I have a right to protect that information, especially from non-governmental people, like developers. I CHOOSE what goes on my OS devices, not developers or governments. A "bad actor" has several ways to get past any iOS setting but it's more difficult when there aren't settings that would easily allow the beginning of opening an iOS device. This mode is a semi-locked door when it currently is a wall with no way to get through.
    On top of that, I hope Apple includes further empowerment of main ‘Family Sharing’ holder to have even stronger control to prevent any devices within the household to switch into ‘less secured’ mode (whatever the end state mode may be called). Main holder likely is also the pay-master of all Apple devices for household + main support/go-to person whenever there is problem with the devices. Please empower us stronger control so that we should not revert back to old days where so much time and effort spent to fix family members’ devices due to their ‘unsafe’ behaviours (eg jailbreaking). It was a nightmarish period that’s long gone. No wish to go back to those days!!!

  • South Korea finalizes rules forcing App Store to take third-party payments

    We’ll see how this goes. The Apple Discussion Forums are full of requests for refunds for all sorts of reasons. Just a week ago there was an article about some parent whose daughter ran up a $1K in-app purchase bill. The father started a media campaign to get Apple to refund the money, which they did. Let’s see what happens when a parent like that is told Apple has nothing to do with payments and the developer or their payment agent is the one to contact.

    On the Mac side of the house there are a few big payment agents that process payments for various developers outside the App Store. I’ve dealt with them and have had no issues so far.

    I have been a big supporter of both the App Store payment system and the inability to side load but I’m not so sure anymore. The Mac has been this way since day one so why not iOS devices?
    iPhone holds a lot more 'intimate' data than Mac do. The day that side-loading becomes forced-allowed, it may well be the day I start removing many 'intimate' data from iPhone. I have no wish to go through what Android is subjected to and how scams seem to be more successful at Android users due to more 'intimate' data being ripped.

    Apple should simply change their developer software and make it available for a fee—then charge for placement on the App Store.
    Sounds like how supermarkets operate:
    • Monthly rental for shelf-space, the more shelf-space the higher the rental fee (e.g. instead of flat developer fees, class/tiered-basis should work better);
    • % Commission of sales. the more sales the products generate the higher quantum;
    • Sales targets - higher sales volume = lower % of commission;
    • Each service required of supermarket staffs to perform/provide = more fees to pay (e.g. stacking/replenishing goods to the shelf when depleted).
    Use of different identifier/sku to track which payment model each app uses and flows through the processes. Since more work less automation involved for using 3rd party payment, there can be various tiered service catalog model for different class/tier of developer account.

  • Apple hourly workers feel helpless under punishing pressure & mistreatment

    Just wonder why Apple has ‘attracted’ a lot of great customer service staffs away from other Apple authorised resellers and even other retailers where I am residing, if Apple’s retail environment and remuneration are that bad?

    On customers’ attitude and behaviour, it happens across all service sectors, be it Apple or elsewhere. At least Apple has security personnel’s at each store here and will not hesitate to take appropriate actions and involve local law enforcement when necessary.

  • Apple's Self Service Repair unlikely to impact iPhone upgrade cycle, study finds

    Agree with @DAlseth. This will delight a very small number of dedicated DIY folks, but won't make any significant real-world difference for the same reason that having wrenches and pipes at Home Depot doesn't threaten plumbers.

    I'm an engineer and I absolutely don't want to fix my own phone, car, dishwasher or laptop, etc. That doesn't sound like fun, and the time alone negates any value.
    Agrees. In >2 decades of using MacBook+iMac to iPhones+iPads, I have not find the need to even upgrade the specs I purchased for those models in last decade. In fact, I have been trimming the specs of MacBooks and iMacs purchased in recent years after finding the higher specs (more RAM and SSD capacity) served no meaningful needs at all.

    I am an engineer myself and used to repair laptops/desktops >2 decades ago as my job back then. Nowadays, I no longer find the needs to do so meaningfully. Devices lasted as long as its intended lifecycles (3 years for iPhones, 5 years for iPads, 5-7 years for MacBook & iMac subjected to new work requirements or use cases).
