  • Fitbit's Apple Watch competitor will offer third-party apps & 'app gallery' at launch - CE...

The problem is that Apple does excel in all those areas that FitBit thinks it doesn't.  We've heard the same response from Blackberry back in the day as a response to iPhone.  Now look at where we're at.

I like my Apple Watch because it "just works" and it looks stylish.  I don't use all the fancy features, but I might some day when I upgrade.

There's a pretty straightforward reason why Apple doesn't create a machine that has many interchangeable parts. Plain and simply it's called WASTE.  If users upgraded videos cards at the rate that they presume to desire on these forums, we'd have a whole mess of dismembered parts just paying around.  It's highly likely that these parts would never be used again, or if they were, they'd go in crappy Windows machines. This means a lot of circuit boards with harmful chemicals tossed in the trash.

The batter solution is one that Apple has already offered which are products that last and have a long, useable lifespan.  In fact, many Macs from 10 years ago are still in use today and those that are no longer much good, can be recycled.  The value of the product holds well so users can sell the whole product and upgrade, just like you do a car.  When a video card, CPU or RAM is upgraded, you are still stuck with the technology available for the architecture of the motherboard.  Apple has allowed components that can be easily reused to be upgradeable.

Another issue with upgradable components is RELIABILITY.  The more moving parts you have, the last reliable the system will be overall.

  • Review: 2017 MacBook Pro fulfills the promise of the line's redesign

Wow, there’s a lot of armchair engineers in here!

”There’s absolutely no reason Apple couldn’t make the battery, SSD, or RAM user replaceable except greed.”

    Oh really, Einstein?

Have you looked into the specs for how these high-speed components integrate? Because there are no other options. Have you looked into the physical forces exerted on a laptop that would necessitate repair due to socket failure? How about the electrical components that create heat and consume more power? What about thermal design inside of the space?

Oh and if the battery wasn’t the entire insides of the laptop, it would have like 2-3 hours of battery life. Battery technology has improved to a point where the battery will continue to operate in the machines foreseeable useful lifecycle. There’s no need to make it replaceable. None. Just get an external battery pack with USB-C and charge up.

The fact is that Apple employees thousands of people who figure out what the market wants and designs to those specs. You’re a tiny fraction of the market. They’ve determined (as well as other companies) that people want a laptop that is portable (surprise) and gets certain levels of battery life. They want a great screen.

Now many of the gripes I’ve seen have more to do with modern PC architecture (Intel) than Apple. No you can’t have socketed RAM in these newer designs and achieve the same power/performance ratio. Oh and USB-C? That’s a standard and it’s a wonderful port. You should get onboard. Yes I have one single and use one every now and then, but the future of a single interconnect that is almost unlimited in its power and speed is worth the temporary inconvenience.
