  • CEO Tim Cook's compensation cut by $1.5M following Apple's 2016 decline in sales

There are legitimate questions about the Mac lineup. It's pretty bad when even John  Gruber is like WTF Apple regarding the Mac Pro. What reason do they have for not updating it for 3 years and not reducing the price? If Apple doesn't want to be in the pro market then discontinue the product. Same thing with the router business. Those products are woefully out of date. Either update them or kill them. But it does call into question why Apple seems to be struggling from a bandwith perspective. Other than the iPhone - which they have no choice but to update every year at the same time - it seems like it's a struggle to get stuff out the door. Is Apple's functional org structure hurting them? Would things be different if there was one person responsible for the Mac and nothing else?
It's simple. The Skylake architecture for the E5 class of Xeon processors was originally road mapped for Late 2015 and haas been delayed by Intel until early 2017.  It has nothing to do with Apple, it has everything to do with their vendor, Intel.

  • MacBook Pro fails to earn Consumer Reports recommendation for first time

The main reason MacBook Pro is failing by consumers because Apple Store service is sucks. When you take your laptop for repair they treat like your are doing favor. They act like we are idiot. First thing they will tell you, you will loose your data if they send for any repair and even for just replacing screen/display which is nothing to do with motherboard or hard disk. If you ask pull the hard disk due to important data they will tell you your warranty will be voided. List goes on if I start writing. If they don't change themselves how they treat customers apple wont be selling single mac. It's very frustrating. Apple needs to hire 10-20+ years of experience people. Folks they are Apple Store they don't know how to spell bash or motherboard.
Backup to Time Machine. It's pretty simple.  Just had my wife's rMBP services and we backed it up in about 15 minutes before going.  Wiped the SSD and then put back some things from Time Machine to troubleshoot.  Sent it away for repair and it was back in two days with no data loss.  They just ask you to do that since they won't be responsible for data loss.

Also, you can't just pull the HD out in these laptops so yes, that is an idiotic request. Again, just plug in an external HD and time machine to it. They'll even do it for you while you wait.  It's not that difficult.  In fact, it's pretty dang easy.  Try doing that a GeekSquad counter.

  • Apple extends developer deadline to support App Transport Security into 2017

One issue with ATS is it doesn't handle apps that connect to a local network well.  For instance, my app has the ability to set itself up as a web server with a full REST-based JSON web service and web site that allows you to edit content on the device from a browser window.  This same system also handles things like communicating wth other iPads, or to integrate with Google Chromecast.  Basically a lot of functionality relies on an HTTP web server.

The issue is, how to I set up SSL on a mobile device? I'm not even sure this is possible.  So while I have added support for SSL throughout my app for remote web sites, I still can't meet the ATS requirements since the exception is required to maintain functionality.

So I've rushed out end-of-year releases to ensure that we have most of the SSL/ATS stuff taken care of, but will probably need to fight this battle with Apple later.

  • Touch Bar keyboards, 'modest' Mac upgrades on Apple's slate for 2017

Here we go again with the tepid improvements. Apple got its cred by under promising and over delivering; by dropping unbelievably cool products on us. Now all we get in the Mac line are excuses and justifications. I'm not buying the "mature" product argument anymore. The automobile was about as mature as you could get, and then came Tesla. Come on, Apple, Tesla us. Be Apple again. Hoist up the pirate flags and deliver an insanely great, totally unexpected paradigm shifting Mac again.
    Maybe they're under promising again?

In all honesty I think they are being hamstrung by Intel at least on the mobile side of things. They want to move forward with USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 which is only available on a small subsets of processors.  For instance, there is only one Xeon processor that could go in the MacPro lineup right now and the rest of the roadmap from Intel has been delayed by up to two years.  Unfortunately Apple has pinned it's success on a company that is also focusing on mobile now, so they are unlikely to see massive improvements.

The one way Apple can get out of this of course is to design its own processors and chipsets for the laptop segment.  They may have already seen the writing on the wall and started down that design path (which takes years).  But in the meantime, what else do you expect the company to do when the company that makes the core components is happy with the status quo?  You get exactly what Apple is doing... better screens, better keyboard, thinner design and a Touch Bar.  Things that Apple can control directly and that is not tied to Intel.

But, but, but, I need more than 16GB of RAM. (whining, crying baby emoticon)
On a $3000 machine that people may hope to keep for 4-5 yrs, it's not very future proof. Especially if you use a virtual machine, like many professionals do, which effectively can cut your available RAM in half.
Maybe you need a more efficient workflow. Running 3-4 computers off of a laptop is a terrible idea and yes, I have done it for years too. (until I'd ditched Windows development) What are you running in VM that really needs 8 GB in development environment? Why wouldn't you run this in the cloud or use containers instead of whole virtualized operating systems? Again, just seems inefficient even if you had a 32GB option.
