  • Review: Synology DS419slim is a versatile NAS in a compact size

I have one of its bigger brothers (The 918+) and absolutely love it. I have several services running on it inside Docker containers, plus a dedicated MySQL server and Apache web server running. I also moved my Plex Server from running on my iMac over to the NAS so that my Mac doesn't need to be on all the time. I've got 3x8tb WD Red drives now and will add a fourth soon. Even though the drives themselves are not fast, I never ever feel that the performance is subpar.
I run Plex server on my PC also (a nice 8-core system) and never have any issues streaming multiple streams or transcoding formats when the TV or tablet can't. How do these NAS devices handle that?
I wouldn't do more than two transcoded 1080p streams on this particular model, but the beefier models do fine with multiple streams.
Agreed. On the 918+ multiple streams doesn’t kill the box at all. Despite the low-end CPU, there’s hardware transcoding built-in. Perhaps not on the entry-level units, but the plus series support this.

Now that Dropbox has upped their monthly charge to $12, I'm also looking at replacing its functionality. Synology Drive gives me the same features as the Dropbox client including offline file access and syncing. For the critical documents I want to keep an offsite backup of, I plan on using S3 or S3-IA which should lower my monthly cost to roughly $2/month.

With all this, there's still so much capability I could be using.

Good that Apple didn't waste money on this overrated guy. He just good at making good looking movies, storytelling skills not so much.
Kinda makes me think of this gem...

Maybe they can put an Apple Store in the ground floor. The closest three stores to downtown Seattle are 20+ minutes away.
Funny. The U Village Apple Store is gorgeous, and right across the parking lot from an always empty Microsoft Store. Interestingly, 333 Dexter is right across the street from the palatial Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Building.
I agree that it's gorgeous, but it's also stupid. I went in twice trying to get my hands on new devices and wasn't able to try them out because, despite the ridiculous size of the store, they have exactly one of each Mac on-hand. If course if you want to try out an iPhone or Watch you're covered, because there's a gazillion of each color and size. Each time I was trying to see the new iteration of the 15" MBP and they literally had one (which was already being fondled by another).

You're definitely spot-on about the Microsoft store. There are usually about nine-hundred people in the Apple store, and about 15 in the Microsoft store (14 of which are employees).

  • Apple finally kills vestigial Dashboard in macOS Catalina

I'll miss it. I use Weather daily and frequently use the Conversion widget. I also have a timer widget I've found incredibly handy, as well as a HTML color palette that I occasionally use, although that functionality is built-in to the IDEs I regularly use.

At one point I had developed a custom RSS widget for a forum I once hosted, but it was rarely used and so I stopped supporting it.
