  • The Mac startup chime is making a return in macOS Big Sur

My late-2014 iMac Retina 27" has never stopped making the startup sound. I have installed every OS X and macOS update that Apple has released. It is currently running macOS 10.15.5. I have never entered any Terminal command to (re)enable the startup sound. I know it still makes the sound because a spontaneous reboot woke me up the night before last. :)
FTA, the change was introduced in 2016 macs. I had to use terminal to enable it in mine.
Ah. I understood from this article that an OS X update in 2016 disabled it.

"Although a software update in 2016 removed the startup chime, a later update to macOS Catalina actually added them under-the-hood -- though it required a Terminal commandto actually enable them."

  • HomePod sold out on online Apple Store as refresh rumors swirl [u]

While I enjoy my HomePods (mostly - following a poor initial experience due to software bugs), I think they're about $100 too expensive. The sound-to-price ratio of my Sonos One and Amazon Echo devices makes it tough to choose the HomePods. I find the HomePod to be batter for music in terms of quality and playing what I ask for, but the Echo is more useful as a "smart speaker". I find that I tend to use my Echo Show 8's most often even though the sound quality isn't as good as the HomePod.

This is a risk you take with ANY device that relies on a service provided by others in order to function.

  • Apple working with 'American Idol' to use iPhones to finish the season

I'm not nearly the Idol fan that I used to be 15 years ago, but I'm curious to see the results.

The quality of SNL At Home was lower than I expected even though I managed to chuckle a couple of times. I might could do a bit better making the best use of the equipment I had, but I have to give the actors credit for trying to remain entertaining while doing their own hair, makeup, costumes, and filming at home.

Still, seeing professional actors struggling to keep people entertained under the conditions conveyed the comforting message that we're all in this together.
