  • Amazon reveals new Echo devices including Echo Spot, Echo Plus & upgraded $99 standard Ech...

The Echo Spot sounds bad, the screen is way too small, and is over-priced.

My brother bought two Echo Show devices recently. They don't sound any better than my original Echo. In fact, they project sound only in one direction instead of 360° and the screen is too small to be read from across the room.

The new Echo and Echo Plus are priced more reasonably. I bought my three Echo devices for under $100 each over the last year. I'm not compelled to upgrade anytime soon.

  • Nest brings HVAC energy saving to the masses with $169 Thermostat E

    Hideous.

I installed a Nest Thermostat in my new home in 2012. I'm currently on my third warranty replacement. One died. The others can't read humidity accurately. They sometimes go to "deep sleep" and don't wake up and turn on the system until I wave my hand in front of them. They're horrible at operating heat pumps (unnecessary use of auxiliary heat, for example). App lags behind actual operation. I could go on and on about the issues I've had. It does work well with my Amazon Echo devices, though.

  • Apple TV losing market share to streaming set-top box rivals Roku, Amazon

    I'm not surprised.

    1. There's still no Amazon video app, though one is promised to be coming.
    2. HULU's latest interface is complete garbage. It's frustrating and the font is too small to read even on 55" TV. (Not necessarily limited to Apple TV.)
    3. Netflix's latest interface with auto-preview is an annoying waste of data. (Not necessarily limited to Apple TV.)
    4. All of my Siri remotes become unresponsive shortly after powering on my Apple TVs for 15 seconds or so.
    5. One of my three Apple TVs reliably turned on my Sony TV and controlled the volume on my Yamaha receiver for over a year. A few months ago, it just quit. Resets, restores, nor HDMI cable replacement helped. The other two rarely, but sometimes, operate the Samsung TVs to which they are connected.
    6. It's almost impossible to orient the Siri remotes in the dark or without looking at them.
    7. It's almost impossible to hold on to a Siri remote - it's simply too small and slick. I had to add a third-party case just to make them usable.
    8. Even after more than a year, I still can't seem to figure out what button does what intuitively without having to stop and think about it.

I love Apple and I really wanted to love the Apple TV 4, but it's been more an exercise in frustration than anything else.

To this day, the interface on the Apple TV 3 still wins for simplicity and usability. The Apple TV 4 remains one of my least-liked Apple products ever.

  • Roomba developer iRobot looking to sell owner's room data to Apple to bolster HomeKit

I'd pay THEM to use the data from my 900-series Roomba if it would actually improve the operation of this dumb thing.

I upgraded from an 800-series thinking that the camera would allow it to remember and learn over time. I was actually disappointed to learn that it "forgets" what it learned after each cycle "in the interest of privacy" so that each time it starts cleaning, it has to learn all over again.

Each time it cleans, it does a very good job at mapping my home (as can be seen on the app), but it always gets stuck or shuts down in the same places. If it would remember map data, it would know, "I got stuck here before, so I'm going to avoid this area".

The worst part is that I have a few rugs with black stripes in my single-story home. Every time it encounters one of those black stripes, the cliff sensors shut it down. There's no way to (reliably and without voiding the warranty) disable the cliff sensors. There should be a setting to turn these off for single-story homes - there is NOTHING in my home (and many other homes) for it to possibly fall off of!

iRobot has no sympathy regarding the design oversight.

  • Honda makes 2018 Ridgeline next truck to get Apple's CarPlay

Haha! I've been using CarPlay in my 2017 Ridgeline RTL-E that I bought in June of 2016.

    AI needs a fact-checking department.
