  • Third-party iPhone screen repairs no longer void warranty, Apple says

They probably got slapped on the wrist for this.

Imagine a car manufacturer voiding the warranty on your the entire car because you chose to have a cracked windshield replaced somewhere other than the dealer. That dog won't hunt!

  • iOS 10.3 beta enables calls on iCloud-connected devices for Verizon customers

AT&T calls this "NumberSync". I didn't realize until a few days ago that this technology even existed - I though the closest thing was Continuity/Handoff/whatever that routed calls through the iPhone from other Apple devices (therefore requiring the iPhone be on and on the same network as the other devices). I stumbled across it while poking around in the settings on my iPhone a few days ago. Once configured, I can now use my Apple Watch, iMac, MacBook Pro, or iPad to send and receive calls even if my iPhone is off or not on the same network. Pretty nifty little "new to me" feature. :)

  • Simply Mac stores closing amid apparent corporate restructuring

    Good riddance.

I once took a pristine, out-of-warranty iMac that was covered under an Apple hard drive replacement program to a Simply Mac location. Initially, they refused to perform the repair because the hard drive was working properly at the time. I had to point out that this was a proactive measure by Apple regardless of whether or not the drive had failed. They eventually agreed to proceed with the repair. Days later, they called stating that the logic board and RAM were faulty and required repair at my expense. Funny - the computer worked just fine when I dropped it off! After some strong conversation, Apple stepped up and agreed to replace these components (even though it wasn't their responsibility). After the repairs were complete, my iMac was returned to me with scuff marks on the aluminum and fingerprints and dirt on and behind the display. When I dropped the iMac off, it was indistinguishable from a new unit. I was LIVID. I filed complaints with the corporate office, Apple, the BBB, and wrote multiple, negatives reviews on my experience. I found Simply Mac's employees to be defensive, arrogant, unhelpful, and incompetent and never went back.

I'm perfectly fine with Apple's exclusivity when it comes to physical locations - I just wish they had more of them. The closest one to me is a five-hour trip.

  • Elago W3 Stand stand makes a charging Apple Watch look like a miniature Macintosh 128K

    Must have!

I have Elago's R1 Intelli Cases for my Apple TV 4 remotes and LOVE them.

    Without the case:

    1. The remote easily slides out of my hands and onto the floor or down inside furniture.
    2. I touch the trackpad unintentionally causing undesired operation.
    3. The remote gets dented, cracked, and/or scratched when it hits the tile floor.
    4. I can't tell which end is up in the dark.
    5. The remote scratches my furniture.

Elago's case solved all of these problems and created absolutely none. Their products appear well thought out and well made. I'm happy to see they have a solution for my Apple Watch, too!
