  • Heads of US law & spy agencies say phones by Apple rival Huawei pose inherent national sec...

People don’t remember that Ed Snowden revealed the FBI was intercepting technology mid-flight on the way to customers so they could install spy devices before the delivery reached the customer?

    Short memories these days.

Also, I agree Chinese government tied companies are a security and spying risk.
Agreed and adding a little.  I don't think a spy agency or other bad actor needs to reverse engineer or defeat all of Apple's security measures.  Tampering enough to compromise security is not always that hard.

Brief story: I bought a Cisco switch from a discount vendor. The packaging showed it originated in Hong Kong and went through Australia, which I thought was odd. Everything else looked spot-on though, including the internals.  An IT auditor asked how I knew it was a genuine switch. Given the packaging, I said I didn't know as it was clearly at least a gray-market item.  I got in touch with the FBI (Operation Cisco Raider) and then someone at Cisco.  Based on the motherboard serial number, it was not in Cisco's production database. Was it a counterfeit or otherwise doctored switch?  Was it just extra production after hours to line someone's pockets? Who knows? The FBI took it and that was it.  What does this have to do with anything?  iPhones are assembled in China as everyone else already noted.  They're not made in Apple factories. Stuff can happen.  Do I think it's happening to iPhones?  Not really.  But could be.  I know there's quite a flow of spare parts available on eBay that probably came at least in part from the factories producing the phones (parts that failed tests or just stolen, who knows?)

Hey @VRing, does that supposed magical and revolutionary custom build of yours that is SO much better than an iMac Pro do this? Didn't think so and never will!
I know you're just flaming, but TPM chips have been in the vast majority of Windows computers and motherboards for enterprise use for years. As well, a number of these types of computers have a self-healing BIOS to restore a corrupt or potentially attacked BIOS.
I've used enterprise hardware with TPM chips for years.  Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the TPM does what the T2 chip does.  For me, it just seems to be like a trusted enclave that to my knowledge I am only using for BitLocker encryption.  I don't know or care enough to find out about VRing's "magical and revolutionary custom build" but essentially, isn't Macexpress correct if referring to the T2 chip?

  • iOS 11.2 beta switches on quicker 7.5W wireless charging for iPhone 8 & X

My Ikea charger only supports 5W  :/  Why does this matter for a bedside charger?  If you use a sleep tracking app that keeps your phone on all night, your phone may not be fully charged when you get up.  Since I got the iPhone 8 and the charger, this has only been an issue a couple of times, and then not a really big issue.  Still can't beat it for $11.99.  But you might like to know . . .

  • First look: Apple's bionic iPhone X with Face ID

Not specifically iPhone X but also for iPhone 8 users: I had no intention of buying a Qi charger until I saw one at Ikea for $11.99.  The long cable I was using was starting to go bad (thanks cat). The charger is designed to be installed in the table or desk of your choice by drilling a hole, and it lies flush with the surface. Pics below.  The hole saw was $5.  Ikea also has standalone Qi chargers for about $20.

  • 25% of Microsoft Surface owners report problems within 2 years, Consumer Reports finds

I bought a few recently at the specific request of some users.  MS made it a real pain in the ass to deploy in the smaller business environment.  Some mission-critical apps (made by Microsoft!) aren't installing right.  The more I have to deal with it, the less I like it.  The dock is very inelegant with the power brick about the same size and weight as the dock.
