I never would have thought the transition from a 7 to an 8 would be so astonishing! Words simply cannot do it justice!

    Also, here are the notes:

Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.4.7 in which some documents containing some Chinese or Korean language characters might not print as expected.

    Finder and Apple applications

Resolves an issue in which a Finder alert message with the buttons "Initialize", "Ignore", and "Eject" might not appear after connecting a partitioned FireWire hard drive.

Addresses a potential issue in which Preview may unexpectedly quit.

Improves reliability of iTunes syncing with certain iPod models.

    Networking and modem

Resolves performance issues that could occur when connecting to a Comcast network.

Improves security by adding support for EAP-FAST for AirPort wireless authentication.

Improves Express Card behavior for portable Intel-based Macs.

Improves reliability for connections made in Ireland with an external Apple USB Modem.

Improves connection reliability for external Apple USB Modems when resuming an Internet connection after answering an incoming call.

A computer restart is no longer needed to restart nfsd.

Improves Apple File Sharing client performance by changing the default AFP WAN quantum size.. More...

Windows File Sharing now generates only one process, avoiding an issue that could cause a Mac OS X computer to become unresponsive if it won a master browser election.

Improves reliability when faxing in France or Belgium via an external Apple USB Modem.

    Third-party

Resolves an issue for Microsoft Word in which Word might stop responding when saving a file that uses certain OpenType fonts.

Adds RAW image decoding support for these cameras: Sony DSLR-A100, Nikon D2Xs, Fuji FinePix S2 Pro, Fuji FinePix S3 Pro (+Highlights) and Konica Minolta 7.

Resolves an issue in which thumbnails may appear blank when importing RAW images from a Canon 30D camera.

Improves compatibility for the TV Tracker 2 Dashboard widget.

    Other

    Includes recent Apple security updates.

Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs.

ColorSync matching no longer fails when using a V4 ICC profile in an application opened with Rosetta on an Intel-based Mac.

Addresses an issue in which some USB devices connected to a PCI card may not be recognized after starting up or waking the computer.

Resolves an issue in which external USB-based video cameras may not be available after quitting the application that is using it.

Reduces time needed to transfer data from a USB-based image scanner.

Improves responsiveness of the Translation Dashboard widget.

Addresses an issue in which text typed with the Hangul input method may not be visible while the Caps Lock key is active, on PowerPC-based Macs.

Adds support on Intel-based Macs for multiple cores to LAPACK and BLAS routines in the Accelerate framework; the maximum number of threads used by Accelerate BLAS routines is now limited by the environment variable VECLIB_MAXIMUM_THREADS; addresses an issue with some complex BLAS routines in the Accelerate framework that were encountering an illegal instruction.

To be honest, I am disapointed MT OpenGL wasn't included.

Apple Computer on Friday afternoon released the eighth maintenance and stability upgrade to its Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system in just 18 months -- Mac OS X 10.4.8.

    Mac OS X 10.4.8 Client

The Cupertino, Calif-based company said the update is recommended for all users and includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for connecting to wireless networks using the EAP-FAST protocol, using OpenType fonts in Microsoft Word and connecting with 3rd party USB hubs.

Mac OS X 10.4.8 also improves broadband network performance, RAW camera support, scanner performance and Apple USB modem reliability.

Other enhancements in the release include improved performance of the Translation widget and better support for printing documents with Asian language names.

Mac OS X 10.4.8 also bundles previous security updates. It's available as 149MB Combo update or 31MB Delta update for PowerPC Macs. For Intel Macs, Apple offers a 294MB Combo update or 206MB Delta package.

    Mac OS X 10.4.8 Server

Mac OS X 10.4.8 was also accompanied by the release of Mac OS X 10.4.8 Server.

The PowerPC version includes over a half-dozen fixes and is available as a 62MB Delta upgrade. A Universal version of the update weighs in at 202MB. Meanwhile, Apple has also posted a 196MB Combo update for the PowerPC version of Mac OS X Server.

    Security Update 2006-006

Also on Friday, Apple issued Security Update 2006-006 for Mac OS X 10.3.9 Panther Client and Server. This update improves security for CFNetwork, Cyrus SASL, Flash Player Plug-in, QuickDraw and WebKit. The client version weighs in as a 30MB update and the server version a 43MB download.

You should never, EVER, repair permissions. I've heard stories of people getting their HDs wiped and their gym locker combination erased because they repaired permission. Trust me.

True. Repair Permissions is only if you are experiencing "issues".

    ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS repair permissions.

There are a couple buttons to push when you open Disk Utility...

One that says 'repair permissions', and one that says 'Initialize Disk'.

I think your friends must of pushed the wrong button.

I'll leave it to the pro's here to explain why you always SHOULD repair permissions.

This is actually the update I'd really been waiting on myself. There's a few things like that in there that make me wonder if this is the official update list. I can see how different national systems could require a difference in faxing software, but it's still funny.

    Repair permissions when something's weird.

    Don't repair permissions just because.

    End of debate.

Macbook 2.0 up and running.. It did a little work on the reboot... spun the cog for about a minute or so and then rebooted up to 10.4.8. A couple items changed in airport so I have received a Don't Change or Change All box for the keychain on it.. but that's about it.

    Installed the update (combo).

After it rebooted, HDD went nuts, and still is... a process 'mdimport' is crunching away like crazy.

    Photoshop works fine.

When the HDD stops working, i'll repair permissions (which I was told you should always do, by the guru's here), and then restart and watch my baby sing.

I don't know where those update size numbers come from. My PPC update was 22.3MB, for a dual G5, 2GHz.
