Of course, this is moot as when Mac OS X starts up, I get a message saying to hold down the power button to restart.
That is called a kernel panic. It is either due to bad hardware, or buggy kernel extension. I suppose if Windows boots up O.K. and then works for lengthy periods of time, it's probably the latter.
Do you have any third-party "haxies" or third-party hardware drivers (such as for a PCI card)?
I installed the updates and the damn system started up in Windows!!!!!!!!!
Unless I hold the option key down when rebooting, it will start Windows.
Of course, this is moot as when Mac OS X starts up, I get a message saying to hold down the power button to restart.
I CANNOT get into Mac OS X. Windows works fine.
What the hell is this.
I am pissed beyond belief!
Any ideas here?
Thanks.
I used to have Boot Camp on my MBP, but I removed it a while ago. However, after I installed the 10.4.8 update, my system booted up to an image of a folder with a question mark on it (no Apple logo, no spinning cursor). I tried holding down Option when it booted and choosing the Mac OS X option, but I still got the same thing. I'm guessing that Boot Camp left some trace of it's old partition on my system, and my startup disk was somehow set to that by the update.
Anyways, I finally had to boot from the install CD, physically set the startup disk to be Mac OS X 10.4.8, (and I also repaired permissions just in case). Then I rebooted and everything worked fine.
Well, could you tell the rest of us what on earth you two are talking about?
I think they're just talking about the blueish tint that is appearing in some computers after this update (though I'll agree that the way he said it was just confusing). I experienced this myself, but then my eyes got used to it.
Hold down shift key after selecting the Mac partition to boot from. This triggers Safe Boot mode, which does things like clear kernel extension caches. Many times, this will let the next restart boot normally.
I used Onyx to clear out all the caches and rebuild the system... all seems OK... for now.
After updating my machine was launching a screensaver, but I have Never selected as when to start the screensaver. Also I noticed that I could not highlight or select text from a web page, which I use allot to narrow dowm internet searches. I took this advice and used OnyX in the standard settings, ran the monthly, weekly, and daily maintenance routines, and then I cleaned out the caches that are already selected in OnyX. Now everything is back to normal, no more screensaver issues and I can now select text from web pages and paste it to Google for enhanced web searches. So if you are having any problems then try OnyX, I started from the left and continued to try the different options until I cleaned the caches and OnyX said that I needed to restart. Aftar the restart everything is back to normal.

thankyou for explaining this a little better. Yes some Macbook Users are experiencing a blueish tint after installing the update. And Apple support has little or nothing about it.
Installed 10.4.8 this morning, and this afternoon I got a kernel panic trying to play a song in iTunes. This hasn't happened in at least a year for me. Anyone else experienced any kernel panics?
2.0 Ghz MacBook, 1 GB RAM. iTunes 7.0.1.
I got one today. Didn't do a damn thing, keynote had been sitting there with the same slide on a PBG4, untouched for about 5 minutes. Then Zip -- KP. Right as I was going to start class.
After updateing three intel macs, this update sucks. Programs are unexpectedly quiting all the time. This is one buggy release on the intel side.
I agree. I haven't had any problems with programs crashing, but I just noticed that my MBP won't go to sleep anymore (neither by closing it, nor by using the Apple menu).
I'll try that OnyX thing, but this is really annoying...
[Edit: I used OnyX to clear the system caches, rebooted, and now my MBP goes to sleep fine. Not sure which one fixed the problem -- rebooting or using OnyX.]
Did anybody verify OpenGL performance regardless the fact that apps need to be optimized for MT OpenGL if it might be implemented as we tought it could have been done?
I saw some benchmarks that showed a decent performance increase but nothing compared to what was in the demo a while ago. When apps are compiled to take advantage of it, we should see up to double framerates. At least then, the Mac towers won't be shown up in gaming benchmarks when PCs get 100+ fps and Macs get 70 fps or less.
But now that 10.4.8 has multi-threaded OpenGL, I'd expect games developers to take advantage of it quite soon. They might even be able to do it in Parallels/Crossover and that would be great.
Can people check their kernel panic logs in /library/logs and see if it's maybe the new OpenGL drivers that are causing problems? OS X uses a lot of OpenGL so lots of things can cause a crash.

OnyX fixed the problem, I tried rebooting first then I used OnyX to clean out the caches. Actually I rebooted more than once trying to troubleshoot the problem, so it was only after using OnyX that the problems disappeared.
Does the Combo Update ever Shows-Up in the Software Update Program?
I believe if you have a version more than 0.0.1 away from the current release, yes, the combo updater shows up. (e.g. in the case of this 10.4.8 update, if you're running 10.4.7, you'll see the delta update, and if you're running anything from 10.4.0 - 10.4.6 you'll see the combo updater.)

I noticed it also, though i was loosing my mind, until I read your post.

This update is messing up the color profiles on a lot of macbooks.
Check the apple support forums.
If anyone is having this issue, like I was... use this color profile, and it fixes everything:

In terms of the goofy colors, it probably has something to do with your ColorSync profiles?

Which apps? Have you eliminated third-party conflicts? Checked for updates? Tried in new user accounts? Repaired permissions

The most annoying is my DVD player quiting about three times through a feature length film. Widgets stop working on occasion to now.
Safari quits unexpectedly all the time now. These problems are mainly on my new 24" iMac.
