  • Apple gets FCC approval for Mac Pro tower, and rack-mount version

    ITGUYINSD said:
What would one be doing when rack mounting it?  It doesn't have a true server operating system, but a server app (with minimal functionality at that) which runs on top of macOS.

With racks typically down the hall and in a secure room, how would one use one of these?

Incorrect. The Server app was merely for management of built-in services. macOS is true, certified UNIX, which means you can install any number of easily-available services onto it. Everything can be installed via Terminal, you don't need a fancy interface to get things installed and configured.

I run a full web server setup on my MacBook Air for my web development. Nearly identical setup to what I run on my 20+ production servers (all Ubuntu Linux-based). Same software.

  • Sony has been hyping Apple Vision Pro display tech since 2022

Two things stand out in this article:
MicroLED display. So Sony showed this tech ALL THE WAY BACK IN 2022? I see that Samsung is also currently selling MicroLED TV's starting at $74,999.

Careful not to mix up LED and OLED. Those are different technologies.

MicroLED is not the same as MicroOLED. That "O" matters.

MicroLED is superior to MicroOLED, but is vastly more difficult and expensive to produce.

  • Compared: M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro

Maybe I'm getting old, but this statement just rings as being overly dramatic and excessive:
Apple's refresh to the line introduces one extremely major change, that of the switch over from M1 to M2. The change in chip should provide a considerable performance boost for those buying it over the previous generation.

Wasn't it expected? Why is it an "extreme" change? The M2 is not that much of a leap over M1. The move from A-series to M-series was more dramatic, wasn't it?

  • Tom Hanks now says 'Greyhound' film was 'rescued at sea' by Apple TV+

The original comments were open for interpretation. Being heartbroken that the movie wasn't being seen on the big screen is not equal to being heartbroken that Apple bought the movie rights. Yet AppleInsider's original headline portrayed it that Hanks was upset with Apple. That was a disservice to all readers. Shameful.

  • Apple hit with lawsuit after admitting to slowing down iPhones with depleted batteries

Just another person making this world muddy and messy.

Apple doesn't owe anybody any money.

  • Microsoft's next event is around when the Mac & iPad event is expected

October 23, 2001 is when the world changed. iPod was introduced. I remember because that's my birthday.

I wish Apple would get back to surprising us with new products, not just iterations.

  • Google continues to awkwardly push for iPhone RCS integration in new 'Meet iPager' video

If Apple were to implement RCS in Messages today as an option to message Android users, it removes the simplicity of using Apple Messages and introduces Google's fragmented issues to the platform.

That's not entirely true. Presently, Messages attempts to detect if the receiver's phone number is registered with iCloud. if so, it attempts to send the message as an iMessage. This might still fail if the recipient has no signal or has turned off data. In that case, it "falls back" to sending as an SMS message.

RCS requires data, and many people turn off data when they don't need it, so aren't they receiving fallback SMS messages even from other Android users? How does Android handle that scenario?

It's clear now that Apple is holding on as long as possible to show the elegant advantages of iMessage, so it's clearly a money play, but RCS is still a messy protocol that doesn't have as broad support as SMS does.

    Apple would need to:
    1) Test if the recipient can receive an iMessage.
    2) Fallback to RCS and test if the recipient can receive this. How can they tell?
    3) Fallback to SMS.

It might be Step 2 that complicates the process. How does the network inform the sender if an RCS message was received?

  • Action button shown in new iPhone 15 Pro case leak

This whole time, I thought this Action button was going to be opposite the Volume buttons, where the Power/Sleep button is. If they are going to add an Action button, that would have been the better candidate... a multi-purpose button.

For myself, I'm constantly fiddling around to find the Volume buttons in the dark. Now we'll have a third button to contend with? Downgrade in user experience.

  • Apple will crush the DoJ in court if Garland sticks with outdated arguments

Apple can't win. Microsoft spent 8 years on US antitrust cases before making a settlement. Gates left the company he founded and Microsoft management lost focus.

Apple+EU has been a disaster for years. Apple spent 10 years on promising before finally being forced to USB-C. Now EU has had enough with politicians hitting Apple in several ways causing disruptions to hardware and software. Apple is taking a beating every week.

And now this... a case started under Trump that moved forward for 5-6 years. At a time when Car just failed, AVP is in need of full focus, competitors are all AI, and the last 4 iPhone generations are looking and behaving much like iPhone 12 (design, MagSafe, 5G)...   a legal battle into the next decade is not what the doctor ordered.

We need Apple to get out of these battles and focus on the future.

Apple never promised USB-C for 10 years. What nonsense it that?

It was smart of Apple to finally move to USB-C — yes — but they were in their full rights not to until being forced. We all wish they voluntarily did so a few years earlier.

The Car project never failed. So much would have been learned from it and applied to other projects. Heck, much of Vision Pro's "sight" tech was likely rooted in work done on car vision tech. The Car project also facilitated the "new CarPlay experience" that is being installed on many other brands. So what if Apple isn't going to build their own car... they are a software company, too, and the Car project helped the software evolve tremendously in ways we haven't seen yet. Not a failure.

  • Apple gradually releases new firmware for the AirTag

    It's time for Apple to:

    - streamline their approach to changelog notes across all software products
    - separate security updates from feature updates
    - do a comprehensive overhaul of release testing across a broader range of scenarios

The fact that this release is going out without any notes is a red flag for how misaligned the software teams are.
