  • Apple 'destroys dreams' says Telegram, as it shuts down monetization plans

Telegram's CEO has announced that the company is canceling its monetization plans, saying it would work outside of the App Store rules, following objections from Apple.

    Telegram
    Telegram

Pavel Durov posted on his Telegram channel on October 28 that Apple wasn't happy with the company's plan to let content creators monetize their posts that used Telegram's payment system instead of Apple's. He also called on regulators to take action.
Unfortunately, we received word from Apple that they were not happy with content creators monetizing their efforts without paying a 30% tax to Apple. Since Apple has complete control over its ecosystem, we had no alternative but to disable such paid posts on iOS devices.
This is just another example of how a trillion-dollar monopoly abuses its market dominance at the expense of millions of users who are trying to monetize their own content. I hope that the regulators in the EU, India and elsewhere start taking action before Apple destroys more dreams and crushes more entrepreneurs with a tax that is higher than any government-levied VAT.
The full message can be found on Durov's Telegram channel.

    Telegram's plan

A report on Thursday had revealed Telegram's plan to let users charge others to view certain messages by way of a "donate bot" and pay-to-view service offered by a third-party.

A person noticed on Twitter that Telegram had begun quietly rolling out the feature to a few channels. Some users implemented "third-party payment bots," according to Durov, to receive close to 100% of whatever their subscribers paid.

The action goes against Apple's rules, which state that developers must use Apple's system for in-app purchases. Telegram says it will work to offer its users other ways to monetize content outside of Apple's ecosystem.

I expect tons of similar Whitney posts from Elon when Apple crushes his twitter plans - then he will announce he’s making a Tesla Phone.

  • Apple made secret 5-year $275B deal with Chinese government

Let's see. Invest in training for workers to develop cutting edge production and supply chain technologies. Invest in transitioning suppliers to renewable and cleaner energy sources. Sounds like something the U.S. should be interested in but Apple's not in the Military/Oil/Coal/Pharma industries so U.S. Gov doesn't care.
    Sounds like treason to me
  • Supreme Court sides with Samsung over Apple, says payments shouldn't cover whole device profits [u]

The New American Way. No monopolies but.... defend the new world law -- the rich get richer. Someone in America is making money (Wall St). Wall St makes money, these DB tech companies make money. Should we as the consumer care? Apple loyalist since 1978 here. When Apple puts cheaper modems in high end iPhones to create more profit? That isn't IP, thats GREED. Think like the 1% and don't get emotional about money. The more you have, the more power you have. Oh I hate that I wrote all that especially after one cup of coffee but, I miss the old days.

If you are speaking about the Intel modems, than you can be assured they didn't do it for pure greed. They need to have a second source to control costs as well as to ensure adequate quantities for production if issues arrive with either vendor. It is likely also part of a plan to move even more of the modems to Intel going forward as their modems improve in capability. If you don't want the Intel modem, but a model that has the Qualcomm modem in it. Manufacturers do this stuff all the time, but even more so when they build larger unit volumes. The more you build, the more you need to do this sort of stuff. It isn't all about money, but it sure it all comes back to that.
They put a less grade modem in the phone.  Apple, like other tech companies have "purchased down" for part.   It is about supply/demand and if supply is 2 module shitty modems vs 1 quality one that is about money.  Yes it is all about money!!!
Yep,  Apple is playing with fire pulling crap like this.   There's an expectation of better quality when you pay for a premium product.   I guess we shouldn't be surprised that iPhone7 sales not even beating the iPhone6 sales (which should have been easy as a result of the Note exploding). I'm sure Cook will be able to happily boast higher profit margins despite the drop in sales, but I think the Bean Counter in Chief is slowly wrecking the company.   It will be interesting to see how Apple does and if google will release sales numbers for the Pixel in January

I noticed that when I upgraded my Verizon iPhone 7 (which I'm using on AT&T) from 10.0.3 to 10.1, my download speed dropped by almost 50%. I tested my iPhone 7 download speed on ATT right next to my wife's iPhone 6s. I definitely witnessed a dramatic worsening of the download speed after upgrading my iPhone 7 to iOS 10.1, whereas my wife's iPhone 6s, which stayed on iOS 10.0.2, maintained the same download speed. So, I know the issue was not with the cell tower.

I was fortunate to have beeen able to downgrade to 10.0.3 the following day, and after the downgrade, the download speed returned to where it was before I upgraded, which is about 120 Mbps on the iPhone 7.

I wonder if Apple started throttling Qualcom modems in iOS 10.1.
This also raises the possibility that this slowdown is a bug.
I reported this to Apple the same day once I realized that iOS 10.1 reduced my Qualcomm modem iPhone 7 download speeds almost in half, and the downgrade to 10.0.3 restored the full download speed. I requested that an engineer call me back to do further testing (the cell tower is within 100 yards from my house). Apple told me that no one would be calling me back about this. I've tried to google this but found no reference mentioning a similar experience. That was a month ago or so.
So the iPhone 7 is not the best iPhone ever made.    That would be the 6S - faster and with headphone jack.

Just as I suspected. Apple Car was never on hold.
Still, doing software only makes no sense to me. What advantage would Apple have? There's a lot more to autonomous and self driving vehicles than what the UI of the dashboard looks like. Plus there's no evidence existing auto makers are looking to give that up to companies like Apple. Of course I would never want Apple to develop a car just for the sake of it but Apple's success has come from doing the entire stack, the whole widget. When have they ever successfully partnered with anyone on hardware?
Building an Apple car is a big mistake.   Tesla is way ahead.   They will have a million cars on the road before Apple has one.  Titan is a giant waste of resources.

There's no guarantee Tesla will even be around in 5-10 years. The company just sought out another 1/2 billion in new loans. They seem to be teetering on the edge of failure more often and if they miss their deliveries or sales goals too often, they're toast. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that Musk is working like a man possessed to make Tesla and SpaceX work, but he's rushing it because he has to rush it. He has almost no cushion.
No guarantee, yes. But I wouldn't bet against Tesla. He took out some new big loans but the company is far in the lead in the electric car market and that market is set to explode with the launch of the Model 3. All up side. They'll also be selling people home batteries and solar panels to charge their car and power their home. They are well positioned.
Apple has a lot of distance to catch up to Telsa.   They are about to release their 4th Car and have built a large charging network across the world.

Titan just sounds like a money drain.   Siri still needs great improvement (I didn't hear anything in the iPhone announcement to indicate a better Siri).   Apple has no competitor to Amazon Echo.     The new iPhone 7 only had small incremental improvements over the 6 and 6S (The 7Plus's camera should have been on both models ).

Apple definitely needs a new CEO.   One with more vision and less Carpool Karaoke.

    Good news if true.

    Ive had his day.

Its pretty obvious by recent designs that Ive is bored, fat, lazy, and not motivated.

We need new leadership that is exicted, hungry, and willing to take risks.

Few examples of design that is below the Apple standard:

    1. Same iPhone shell for 3 years. Unacceptable. Even cheap POS China companies come out with yearly shell changes.

    2. Mouse.

    3. Pencil

    4. Battery case

    5. Smartkey board, non flush design

    6. Camera bump & ugly antenna lines

These may seem like nitpicking. Small details. But that was what made Apple great. The details.

Yes he certainly seems over rated.   Makes me appreciate how good Jobs was for design when I look at something MEH like the 6, 6S, and 7 designs.   Not nearly as good as iPhone 4 thru iPhone 5S.

And they are certainly killing their computer line.   TouchBar is way overrated.
