Yeah, thanks anyway, Jonathan. I'm pretty close to buying one. Maybe within 2 months or so. I am due to reenlist in the Navy for my last 6 years before I retire and I will get a 15k bonus. The Freelander will be my gift to me.
I've been trying to stay out of this car thread. But having grown up in Europe with annual visits to the Salon de l'Automobile in Geneva, I couldn't do it any longer.

The Freelander doesn't even have a low range. If you're interested in offroading, I'd skip the Freelander just like I would skip a Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV4. However, the Freelander is a very nice car nonetheless. I wouldn't mind getting one when I get a job again next year.

Nay. I prefer the Z3 Coupe. (Is that what it's called?) I'd call mine Ugly Duckling.
In conclusion, let me say that I drive a junky 1993 Mercury Sable station wagon with 110,000 miles on the clock. But I own my appartment. I'd rather own my fancy four walls than my fancy four wheels.

Amen. I know exactly what you mean. My nephew is 14 and starting to get "into" cars. He was all jazzed about some "riced out" Honda and I couldn't give him enough grief about it. I told him it was the lamest of the lame. As for European cars I had an Audi and I loved it but not as much as my RX. (sigh) Gotta get my hands on another one.
Below is a picture of what my 3 series will look like when it arrives this summer (ordered it on import as car prices in the UK are astronomical). It's the biggest purchase of my life!! Before I ordered it, the most expensive thing I had bought was this tricked out PowerBook G3 I'm typing on.
Insurance for this puppy is £2390.45 (go on, work that out in your currency... i dare ya ) as I'm only 18 and have no bonuses.

You'll love your 3xxCi, they are the nicest drive, I have (or should I say my dad) has one similar however it has red leather...
I got my wife an Accord from 1999 since her Saturn has been giving her problems. Nice car. it's a 4 cylinder EX model and it's not too shabby. Wanted the new hybrid but 1. no one had it in our area, and 2. we were on a budget.
As soon as her Saturn is paid off (I'm driving it for now) I'm looking at some other cars. Cars I had in mind: Impreza WRX, VW Golf GTI, or Mazda RX7. But I might have to settle for a Golf GL or something.

Bah, too much turbo lag. If you want a Subaru that really flies and doesn't look any more ugly, then buy yourself a 98, 99, or 00 2.5RS (should cost you between 10 and 15k) and then put 10k of work into it. You can toss in the wrx turbo, then you'll also want a new clutch, and suspension, more engine mods, etc.
I'm changing it for either a BMW 3 Series or an Audi TT though before the end of this year. Can't decide which, any advice?

The 3Series is certainly more practical. And Mr. Dude is right about the mid-life crisis thing.
However, I once rented an Audi TT and took it to the Nürburgring. I was quite impressed by it.
I think either choice would be good, and it's just a matter of taste. Any car I buy has to perform well on the track, and both of those meet that criterion.
no no no. dont buy a TT. its so overpriced. for a few K less, u can get an S2000, which is faster and can handle better. or...u can do what im doing and wait a few years and get the next gen S4, which will come at 350-380 hp V8 w/ projected 0-60 of mid 4s. yeah, w/ AWD, a true M3 killer...

Or you can wait until 2005 and then get a 4th gen. . . . . Rx-7. Rumored 2.0L Triple Rotor (N/A) that belts out 400hp. And it won't be more than 2800lbs, that's guaranteed. If you want supercar performance, the S4 won't be able to give it to you since it can't and won't be able to hold a Ridiculous (capital R) turn. The quattro might smooth things out, though. Anyway, in 2005 I should be making a fat salary working for some dudes or on my own, and with my attitude I'll be single for sure. So you know what I'll be getting.

If only we could get the Defender series in the US. ;(

That 500cc really gives you some extra punch.

BMW 330ci (coupe not convertible). Posibly one of the best looking cars on the road. To me the Audi TT screams "mid-life crisis."

Mid-life crisis? At 19? I hope not, I don't want to die at 38
