So, without MacWorld this year any guesses when Apple will do first quarter product announcements?

There's an easy way to keep the cost down, namely make this an incremental, evolutionary device in the iPod family. Instead of a 10-inch screen and assorted other costly enhancements over the Touch, how about something with a smaller screen, maybe 5-7 inches, which would enhance the Touch experience yet remain true to the notion of a portable, affordable, convenient device. The Touch is already quite a versatile little beast with really only one significant flaw, namely not enough screen real estate. Up the screen size and you enhance the user experience on many levels. Up it just the right amount and you get a shockingly inexpensive tablet-like device, better suited as an e-reader, gaming platform, video viewer, etc. than the current Touch. Up past that point and the cost goes up, the gains are minimal and the device has a great deal less appeal.

Then again, the insistence that the new device will have a 10-inch screen has been such that it's hard to imagine the unit not coming with a 10-inch screen. Soon enough we'll know the answer.

iTunesPlus?... No, wait... The Social?... No??? How about The MarketPlace?... No?...

And we'll need to rename Apple whirl we're at because they don't sell apples, I've checked. Microsoft needs to changed, too, as there is nothing "micro" about their bloatware.

When he says shockingly cheap (or whatever he said) I hope he means free. An iTablet/Netbork sold through Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile with a contract should be as near to free as possible (sub-$300 would be respectable).

We don't have Walmarts over here in Australia, is that where you Americans buy walls?

Judging by their size you must buy a lot of them.

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing is that the Apple iTablet runs Mac applications. That the iTablet is a Mac; a touch Mac.

Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose are a couple of douche bags. They don't know anything. These idiots said the iphone would have two batteries, they have inaccurately predicted dozens of other things. And they let it out all slyly to their "fans." It's pathetic.

The Slate will be so f'ing cheap because you slide a iphone or iPod touch in to the back of it to power it. You will buy apps, publications and periodicals through the same app store but they will look a heck of a lot better on the larger higher resolution screen of the Slate.

Slate's just a display with all the multitouch touch screen tech. No guts.

There... now shut-up Alex and Kevin. go hang out with Cliff Blezinski...

    'Shockingly' inexpensive???

I have been around long enough to remember when the original Mac 128k was rumored to debut at $999 to compete with the IBM Peanut (PCjr) but when it did hit the stores, it was priced at $2495!

    Watch out, history repeats itself!

Of course that depends upon what you call nice. If we take it as a given that the tablet will be ARM based we might be talking about a PC board that isn't much bigger than the one in the Touch. The actual SoC might actually be smaller than some of the kitchen sink approaches on the market now as Apple can tailor I/O very neatly.

My Prediction: $650 for the basic and $799 for the high end (if the tablet is a mac nano and not kindle pro that is). It will have a PA Semi chip and some nvidea 9400M or some equivalent that would work with PA semi's custom chip. It will have full featured OSX on something like a 10.1 inch screen.

If it is just kindle pro and can only read books and maybe do some youtube, I would say $350 to 499 range, but I for one would not be interested.

    Again, your know-it-all logic fails.

I think you are going too far on this one.

From that point of view, Microsoft should have changed their name long ago, to something like:

    Globalsoft

    Monopolsoft

    Billsoft

    Bigbadassoft

    Balmersoft?

    ...

I mean, they are too big to have word "Micro" in their name, right? Was appropriate when releasing first DOS, but not any more. Same as iTunes.

And DOS doesn't operate only disks. It should have been COS (Computer Operating System). Or CYC (Control Your Computer). Or...

Apple just obtained the "TabletMac" trademark. Based on Apple latest products naming convention the name of the tablet will most likely be MacTablet not iTablet if it uses full Mac OS X.

I agree with you, but carrying even a single book with me all the time is hardly comfortable. Not to mention carrying half a dozen.

I like running through a few pages while waiting my wife to do her shopping. Or while waiting some process to finish before I can proceed with work (like backup). Or during the lunch break. Or...

I see myself as more of an Ender than a Peter or a Valentine. That would make Teckstud Bonzo, but I?d rather just refer to him as a bugger.
