First - wireless carriers and the people who use cell phones are more passionate about mobile phones than almost anything else in consumer industry. It is something we all use everyday and it is a personal choice most of the time. Everyone feels attacked at one point or another...
I am an AT&T Customer and an iPhone user. There are deeply technical challenges with integrating an iPhone in Verizon's current CDMA network. CDMA makes up about 6% of the global mobile users.....GSM is about 90% of the global users. Why would Apple undergo a redesign the iPhone for use on a network that comprises only 6% of the market....the market is more than just the USA. Just decrease the cost a little, introduce a new version and you would get more people buying the iPhone than any new Verizon iPhone offering. This is what happened last summer.
Apple may likely wait until both AT&T and Verizon utilize the same LTE (GSM) technology. A new "4G" LTE iPhone could be used across carriers technically. However, the Verizon user must keep in mind that when they move out of 4G coverage, the Verizon network will require that iPhone to have either a CDMA radio in it or no coverage. Even in this case the Verizon network will drop from maybe 20Mps download to 1.5mps. AT&T is upgrading all main metropolitan areas to 7.2Mps max theoretical dowload, so dropping back from 20Mps to 7.2Mps download will be a lot less painful.
Lastly, AT&T hauls more data in a day than everyone else combined. I only wish Verizon got the iPhone - lets see how they handle it on their network? Could they handle a 6000% increase in data haul in the last 24 months? No carrier could do this flawlessly.

There is no deep technical challenge --- it's all plug and play. Former Virgin Mobile executive was saying that it cost no more than $5 million to design a CDMA iphone.
I guess we'll see if its all plug and play........you have to remember that a device is only as good as the network that supports it. It may be technical feasible to make a CDMA iPhone, but how do you think that Verizon's network would handle the addition of an iPhone to the network. iPhone users download and use data at much higher rates than an other user plus the added users that would changeover. Try adding half-a-million users nationwide in month.
Again, if Apple can make a 3G CDMA/4G GSM phone and Verizon is so close to 4G for its consumers as their commercials state, and if Verizons network is soooooo awesome - everyone should have a Verizon 3G/4G phone by summer with no network issues, great battery life, etc.
I just don't think that is possible. Apple will wait till 4G and Verizon should if they are smart....their network just couldn't handle it any sooner.

You have to remember that this is a comparative exercise. Verizon's network can go down in flames --- but as long as Verizon sucks less than the other carriers, Verizon will continue to be the king of the wireless networks.
It is not very hard to suck less than AT&T Wireless.

AT&T does have it's problems. But their data 3G drowth has been vstly greater than Verizon's. A month or so ago a top Verizon executive said that Verizon's network was ready for the iPhone, when asked. But he added an "I think" to the end of that.

So what if there is a "I think" and so what if Verizon is not really ready --- it's not that hard to just suck less than AT&T Wireless.
It doesn't really matter at this point whether it is possible for Apple to make an iPhone for Verizon. They have drawn their line in the sand and you have to decide which side of it you want to stand on.
It isn't difficult to design a two button mouse. Apple doesn't sell one, and never has and likely never will.
It isn't difficult to design a mini-tower with a decent PCI-E graphic card and easy options for optical and hard drive upgrades. Apple has decided they aren't going to go there and so you have to make your choice and live with it with regard to that.
For me, for now, I really like my iPhone. Verizon has been going a little nuts lately with their $350 ETF's and their mandatory data plans for feature phones. The very plans I used to use to justify them (Connect and Premium) and now gone. AT&T is now the company offering unlimited feature phone data for $10 while Verizon is offering 25 mb for $10 and giving you no choice in the matter.
Thus my family and I are likely going to be going to AT&T and I am a Verizon customer since 2001.
So what if there is a "I think" and so what if Verizon is not really ready --- it's not that hard to just suck less than AT&T Wireless.
They likely will, at least for a while, until they've got a lot of iPhones, Droids and other data hungry phones on their network. Then The Great Slowdown will begin.
