Oh and a quick question for those defending the iPad. If Apple ever re-engineered the Mac to only run Apple approved apps from a Mac iTunes store, would you still support Apple?

Serious question. It's the direction Apple are moving in, so it's not impossible to imagine that happening.

The sites I go to on the web rarely have flash. Most of the flash is in ads I don't want to see anyways. I'm sure Apple know that for its target group not having Flash is not a deal breaker. Also, the iPad is not only a net browser. It's also a stand alone viewer, reader and multi-machine with apps.

The iPad is only half the equation - the cloud is the other shoe and that should drop 2011-12 I would think. (Apple will have learnt a lot from the monumental cock-up that was Mobile Me )

    Probably very true.

I judge the potential success of an Apple product based on how loud the naysayers are. The louder they are, the more successful the new product will be. I think they naysayers, in the case of the iPad, are protesting pretty loudy.

Can't wait for the tidal wave to begin.

Glad Steve's let you in on Apple's ten and twenty year plans. Do let us know more details, please. What I think Apple is doing is freeing devices (and this is the v1 of a very powerful device) from being tied down. iPad will become the way to access information, media, my stuff from anywhere, comfortably. Devices like this need to be engineered tightly. A computer, as we understand and use them today, do not because they are more multipurpose. One only need to look at MS operating systems to see how much crap and gaarbage you can actually get away with. Flash too.

First they ignore you, then they laugh you, then they fight you, then you win.

First generation iPad has it's downsides, but if you look at the competition... oh, wait...

The TROLLS are out already I see.

Completely missing the point as per usual.

No its not. That was their downfall before. They want control, but they NEED other manpower to produce this stuff.

To call iPad "not open" like that MS guy did is foolish. 140 000 aps is not "closed"

Oh come off it, what a stupid thing to say.

It is entirely the point to pull Apple up for the closed nature of the iPad.

    For example - http://theflashblog.com/?p=1703

This is the reality of the iPad for most people. Insulting people does not change that fact.

The only mobile devices that count are SMART devices.

iPod shuffles, nanos and classics don't matter they are dinosaurs.

Same thing applies to Nokia's dumb phones.

The only devices that really matter for Apple are iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and notebooks.

That is the future of mobile computing.

I sorta like the idea that Apple has perused the apps that I install... Otherwise, any kid on the block could crank up anything he wanted and, once the average non-techie user installed it, have a field day.

Much safer for the end-user this way. Sure, it's not a perfect system, but it is better than worrying about who is inside your device and who has your credit card number.

The moment someone sees the missing flash plugin icon, clicks on it, then finds out they can't install flash, then the platform is closed.

No confusing file system exposed to the user. That's not to say that the old ways will go away. I'm sure they will be with us for a long long time. But I DO NOT see the iPad going in that direction. The iPad is a new kind of device. Making it more like a laptop would be going backwards.

    Well said.

The competition are netbooks, and I don't know about you, but I see a lot of those in use on the train everyday.

And netbooks can run flash and multi-task.

A "bigger iPod Touch" will allow useful viewing of medical records for example. Or to read books comfortably. It could become the world's best universal remote control that can be used WHILE reading a newspaper with music in the background. All controlled easily from where you sit. An iPod can do that but not comfortably.

Who thought, years ago, that their phone would run colorful interactive apps? The iPhone didn't replace phones and the Kindle didn't replace books but they replace SOME of them. The iPad will do the same but for more and different thing.

i'm sure apple has done their homework, and whoever buys an ipad, won't have that problem because they won't be interested in seeing content that way...

i guess if so many people are unhappy with not having flash, apple could use a clicktoflash approach? so that the battery doesn't get drained

They had their chance and now its Apple's time. These companies made expensive crap with extra stuff really didn't need and could have cut it to save some money but they didn't. Also to add it didn't really work. Apple gave us something we like, we can use but it mainly it can work! People picking up the iPad know already how to use it and what it can do especially if they already got a iPhone and or iPod Touch. That's was a extremely smart or Apple Genius move because that means a zero learning curve. I'm getting the 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G! I can use this in more ways then Microsoft's Tablet PC and Nokia's crap! These companies that voicing opinions now are the ones feeling threaten because Apple got one upon them plus by Apple's own A4 Chipset in house is a problem for them this might be the reason for low cost something you cannot get out of Intel or AMD. SO these companies that enjoy price gouging consumers reign is over on tablet format. They gotta get lower than $499 and that's something they not use to, so hats off to Apple's iPad!

    This.

Although if MS was smart, they'd shut up about Apple being "closed" and port Office (at least Word, Excel and PowerPoint) over to the iPad.

I was a Windows geek for a long time, and initially had a difficult time transitioning to the Mac. I remember thinking "why can't I right-click" and "Why can't I modify system setting X?" After awhile, though, I became comfortable with the Mac because it was transparent -It allowed me to accomplish what I was trying to do by serving as a tool.

I think my transition to the Mac would have been easier if I had not had so much prior experience with Windows. The mistake in my thinking was assuming that Windows way of doing things was "correct," merely because they were what I had learned first.

To some extent, I think we all need to be careful about judging the iPad or any new product merely because it is not what we expect it to be. As people with experience with computers and technology, we can be blinded by own own preconceived notions of how things should be.

Assuming that nails came before screws, then the first people who saw a screwdriver probably thought it was a stupid tool because it looked nothing like a hammer....Yet, they both still exist.

I can very easily see myself preferring to surf the web while I sit on the couch by using an iPad. If the device provides a good experience, it won't really matter that it doesn't do anything that I can't already do with another device.

Only time will tell, but I'm betting on it being a winner.

As with the MacBook Air, lots of people are going to attack this new device with venom purely out of envy; they want it, but cannot admit it.

Just look around the net. Jealousy can really make people say the wildest of things.
