I'd say all our Moms et al. who are using computers without knowing any basics about how they work is a testament to the market being driven by them. This isn't the 70's where only techies are using computers. The non-techies have been the most profitable force in computing for a long time now.

That is my point. My mom DOESN'T use computers. MS and Dell and even Apple have been making plenty of money, but that is because most people HAVE to use the same operating system that the CEO of Ford, the geeks on this forum and the IT departments of every corporation of the US uses.

Windows and Macs make money because mom's don't really have a choice in anything else - do you think they'll be running Linux boxes? My point is that if they can do everything on an iPad or similar os/platform that they need, THEN they will have a true choice and we'll see what they choose.

That is Apple's strategy. Jobs wants to create another platform for the general public, not just for students and doctors. The iPad is the next step in getting the "computer" part of computing out of the way.

It's simple really. I have a MacBook Pro from 2006. It's long since overdue to be replaced. I say this because the cost in lost productivity is greater than the cost of a new, more powerful, MacBook Pro.

Now I could buy a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro today, or wait for a Core 2010 series processor. Apple, if history is any indication, will most likely keep the pricing line-up about the same (maybe a little cheaper). A Core 2010 series is going to run faster *and* more efficiently than the Core 2 Duo. The combination of the two is very significant. It will be the biggest boost in performance+efficiency since the MacBook Pro line was first introduced.

With this in mind, if you can afford to wait, you'd be getting a lot more machine for the same (or maybe even less) price.

Now, I do video work which requires me to be on the mid to upper-end of the Mac platform. I'm pretty much tapped out using my 2006 MacBook Pro today. I'm happy that I've gotten almost 4 years out of it which is almost 2 years longer than I thought I'd get.

Comparing a Core 2010 to buying a new a Core 2 Duo today, I'd get probably an extra 1-2 years more out of the Core 2010. It's definitely going to be worth waiting for, and it's a bit frustrating to see that PCs laptops having been shipping for over a month now with the Core 2010 series.

But forget about the speed improvements... The power savings is something that would benefit almost anyone. We'll be seeing Core 2010 MacBooks and MacBook Pros that last much longer on a charge as well as run cooler (and quieter).

Thanks, I will. I getting ready to go to Europe for a while, so I'm hoping to buy a 13" for ultra-portability. It's really pretty amazing how convenient those little suckers are. And then I'll want to get a bigger Mac as well, but I need the 13" before my trip. My fear is that as soon as I leave they'll announce the new Core 2010s, and I will have just missed it by days.
