While the exact details of the Gawker article is meaningless, it does jibe with everything that has been coming out lately. Jobs felt stabbed in the back, probably rightfully so, and Schmidt doesn't see eye to eye with Brin & Page. Especially with the China situation.
Mostly I see a tragedy in this story. These were two companies that complemented each other perfectly. If Google didn't make a clear entrance onto Apple's turf, there would have been enough spoils for them to reap at the expense of MS.
Now Google is in a difficult spot with this current lawsuit and animosity with Apple. If Apple uses Bing as their primary search engine then that will be a lot of lost eyeballs. Apple is already locking up advertising with the Quattro acquisition and Apple is rumored to be using their own map-based solution. This is a major source for lost revenues coming from the 3rd largest handset maker. Carriers are locking out Google from not only opposing OSs, but even with Android as evidnced by the Backflip.
I've I am not mistaken..., the way I think I heard... Schmidt was brought by Brin & Page to help them get Google off the ground, cause Brin & Page were mostly software guys, and didn't know how to run a fast growing company...
If, like you say, "Schmidt doesn't see eye to eye with Brin & Page", they wouldn't the simplest solution be for Brin & Page, as the original owners, to fire Schmidt, and make piece with Apple?
But then, how would they Undo Android? I don't see how they'd be able to just kill it, after all the contractual agreements with the carriers and phone makers... So, even if they fired Schmidt, they can't Undo Android, and thus can't get in good graces with Apple..., unless they'd sell Android, or kill it slowly...
But then, Brin & Page are not simply innocent kids... I doubt that it's just Schmidt who secretly surprised them and Steve Jobs with Android... I doubt Schmidt could have acted without Brin & Page blessing, or at least knowledge... So, even if there is Good Copy Bad Cop game going on at Google, I don't see how they would get back in good graces with Steve Jobs/Apple..., unless they settle on some IP Licensing Fees payable to Apple?
And, like others here, I am curious why Schmidt wasn't immediately removed from Apple's Board for espionage? Maybe it's because Apple was hoping to work out a deal with Google on those IP Fees and other Limitations, and when they couldn't it al spilled out in the open, and progressed to Litigation vs. HTC?
We ALL can only guess, cause none of us were behind those closed doors
After seeing Tiger's conquests, Jesse James' "Amish Nazi" mistress and now Schmidt's women, I find it interesting that these guys cheat on their wives with women I would consider less than the typical physical ideal which I think wouldn't be a problem for people with wealth, fame and/or power to get. As scummy as he is Elilot Spitzer at least paid for an attractive women.

LOL Thanks. Here is the dialogue in context from Breakfast Club:
Quote:
Andrew: Look, you guys keep up your talking and Vernon's gonna come right in here. I got a meet this Saturday and I'm not gonna miss it on account of you boneheads.
Bender: Oh and wouldn't that be a bite, huh? Missing a whole wrestling meet!
Andrew: Well you wouldn't know anything about it, faggot! You never competed in your whole life!
Bender: Oh, I know. I feel all empty inside because of it. I have such a deep admiration for guys that roll around on the floor with other guys.
Andrew: Ahhh, you'd never make it. You don't have any goals.
Bender: Oh, but I do!
Andrew: Yeah?
Bender: I wanna be just--like--you. I figure all I need's a lobotomy and some tights!
Brian: You wear tights?
Andrew: No I don't wear tights, I wear the required uniform.
I'm going to suggest Jobs saw every bit of this as just doing business, including the chewing out of Schmidt. Jobs might have welcomed Schmidt to the board with the thought that Google execs would then avoid competing. It doesn't seem to have slowed Google down, but it perhaps didn't really hurt Apple/Jobs either and it was well worth his trying. By chewing Schmidt out, Jobs was effectively saying, "I guess you're not just a pretty face after all." Similarly, just by collaborating on projects like the iPhone, the rumored implicit agreement may have developed between Apple and Google not to hire away each other's employees.
I can't tell you what went through Schmidt's mind, but I'm guessing it was this: He saw Android as an open-source project that didn't so much steal from the iPhone, but complemented it. I'm sure he felt it was the difference between Linux and OS X. Steve knows Google uses their own homebrew Linux systems and doesn't see a conflict with OS X, so why would Steve see the iPhone and Android any differently?
Except, of course, that they ARE two competing platforms, and Schmidt was being myopic. Or else completely dishonest.
If they knew in 2007 that Google was working on a smartphone, why did it take so long for this TRAITOR to be removed from Apple board.
I think Apple investors should file a lawsuit against Schmidt and Google. He stole from Apple and reproduced at Google. If Google was not an American company, I am sure the lawsuit would have been in process by now.
Schmidt in my opinion stole proprietary information for profit. This is business Espionage at the highest level.
I've I am not mistaken..., the way I think I heard... Schmidt was brought by Brin & Page to help them get Google off the ground, cause Brin & Page were mostly software guys, and didn't know how to run a fast growing company...

What you say is probably 99% right. They can't undo Android. The die is cast. Would Brin & Page have done Android without Schmidt, Mayer, etc.? I don't think so. They're software guys who are idealists. Schmidt can't act without them but he can always manage to convince them as he did with China which proved to be a colossal mistake. The reason Schmidt was brought in is because of his business experience.

It could be for any number of reasons from keeping your enemies close to Jobs still believing that a relationship with Google could still continue. No one really knows except those who are really close to Jobs though I suspect that we will eventually know why in the coming months because this story has just started to get really hot in the past week.
I don't know how he thinks. But the history and results of his thinking are plain for all of to see.
Historically he was an okay engineer who worked for a few big names. Got a lucky break at Sun and moved up the food chain, hung round for a bit then got a lead gig at another big name, novell was it? Thing is he's not one of the tech barons, he's started anything.
So many years being a grunt or just suit front for the real names would not have left him feeling so very significant.
Then the google boys give the old man another go at not being the hero just the suited zero.
And what did he do with their cool algorithims, went and made the world leader in spam and general trash advertising. Still unable to think up anything actually tech he then sets upon buying a bunch of other people and turning all their cool ideas into ad vectors and ad targeting data gatherers. Unable to make anything anyone wants he just gives it all away for pretend free so the bottom feeders can rejoice while he harvests their eyeballs.
So he gets a gig with a tech hero who snubs him as what he is, a person who's delivered nothing, an also ran. Then he tries to harvest again and gets slapped upside, Google's got nothing but ads. Even the founders are removing themselves slowly to get away from the leech king.
Coat tail boy, Eric "gave nothing" "spam king" Schmidt. All he's done in the last years is chew up our bandwidth and wreck good properties with ads.
If they knew in 2007 that Google was working on a smartphone, why did it take so long for this TRAITOR to be removed from Apple board.
Apple might have surmised Google was working on a smart phone as early as mid-2005, when Google acquired Android, Inc. (a few months after Apple acquired Fingerworks and roughly a year after Apple filed the application for its latest multitouch patent).

Why not sue Apple's shareholders for voting Schmidt onto the board?

Schmidt is said to have recused himself from board meetings when the subject was the iPhone. And espionage doesn't seem to have entered into Apple's suit against HTC, since Apple's patent applications are publicly available descriptions of the technology in dispute.
And that's exactly why Apple will never get the Hollywood content that it so desperately wants for subscriptions etc. Ask Michael Eisner.
As usual it is hard to work out what you actually mean. Is it that Hollywood moguls are mostly like Jobs (petty, grudge holding titans) e.g. Eisner, Redstone, Murdoch, etc. and that Jobs can't work with those types since they are like him? Or is it that he is not like the amorphous suits that have been coming into some of the media top jobs like Iger and Bewkes and can't work with the more corporate types?
Since he has been successful with the Music industry with a combination of carrot and stick and those guys are are a mix of mobsters and corporate execs, I think Jobs has a chance with the visual media guys - he just needs to work on the carrots and sticks (e.g. a successful iPad) rather than change his personality.
I think AI's board policy is firmly rooted in 1992. They need to get creative with the losers and trolls plugging up the works. I've been commenting here for years under one name or another and I've never seen it as bad as it is lately.
I'd like to see something like a global, invisible, ignore list for the whole forum instead of an individual user. The moderators add the trolls to the ignore list and they disappear from everyone's sight but their own. From their point of view they are posting drivel and wondering why no one ever responds to them, from the rest of us' point of view, they just disappear.
That way no one get's "punished," or "banned" (that they know of), and there is a secret reward system wherein if you are an idiot no one talks to you and you eventually get bored and move on. The normal folks are not tempted to respond to trolls cause they don't even see them. It also removes any incentive for "banned" idiots like teckstud to come back as alts because all trolls are banned and there's just no percentage in it.
I'd also like to see the banning system include the IP address or the MAC address of the computer so when "teckstud" comes back as "TECHSTUD" he is just automatically banned. Yeah, I know there are ways around it, but it would still help a great deal. I mean let's be honest, most of the trolls are trolls because they lack the skill or the smarts to make any kind of cogent argument. Lots of those folks would need a great deal of help to figure out how to fake a new presence on the forum.
Congratulations, I made it to the third sentence of the article. As this is apparent lie, there was no point of reading any further. Google worked on Android much earlier than 2007, Rubin came to Google way earlier (by YEARS) before Schmidt was INVITED to Apple's BOD. It is impossible Apple didn't know about Android.
Question to AI : Have you already hit the rock bottom or will your future articles get even worse than that ?
I've I am not mistaken..., the way I think I heard... Schmidt was brought by Brin & Page to help them get Google off the ground, cause Brin & Page were mostly software guys, and didn't know how to run a fast growing company...
Ranting and raving won't change Google's entry into the phone market. Apple will continue to dominate Google by building better hardware , operating systems and delivery platforms. Apple could always build its own search engine that far exceeds Google or Bing. In my opinion, Google is on the decline and Apple is the rising star.

LOL AppleInsider is so ridiculously apple fanboy .
?? What exactly were you expecting?? Android fans? WinMo?
This is just one more example of how evil Google actually are.
You don't know what you're talking about young man.
Mistress looked kinda tranny to me.
I was thinking Sarah Palin.
