?Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,? said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs.
I dunno why but this really made me laugh. It's like an evil plan to take over the world. The people are experiencing the magic of our new robot helpers... just wait until be activate them and take over the earth!!!!
But honestly these are crazy numbers. I can almost guarantee that at least some of those sold in US were actually ebayed overseas. Even if you can only buy one, selling it for a grand to germany or russia is a sick profit. Sell a couple with your younger brother and you got a MacBook for college.
I took a look at the iPad in a mac store and I did not see a need for one, considering I have a 13 inch macbook. For someone with a 17 incher or even a 15 incher this might be an awesome device, for people that need to hold a PC for their jobs might also be good, but for me as a student right now it is not a device I need.
I refuse to believe that this oversized iPod is selling so well when it has no USB port, a screen that is bad for reading, is too heavy and uncomfortable to hold, has no multitasking, and has a closed app system. Never mind the reality of the situation; the haters must be right!
Apple's products, while refined with each new version, start off as well-polished products, largely because under Jobs' direction, there is a passion for getting the details right.
If this were a Microsoft product, no way they'd have that many sold so soon after launch because most of us would be unwilling to serve as volunteer testers.
Myself, though, I'm hoping that Apple will significantly revise the Touch by adding a larger screen, something in the 5-inch range. That device might well be enough to meet my needs and be more compact than the iPad. Of course that's pure speculation on my part but I do think some changes to the Touch are needed to better integrate Apple's touch-screen product line. Apple likes to have products that are close enough one to the other to entice folks to spend just a little more. Right now the difference between the Touch and the iPad is out of whack with the difference in price. Between the iPhone on one end and the iPad on the other, I think the Touch, if it remains as is, will have a hard time remaining a good seller.

Myself I have a desktop set-up that I use for heavy lifting but I also have a Time Capsule and am currently using a netbook (not happy with it but it's already there) away from my desk. If the iPad hadn't come along, a laptop would have been my next purchase but now I'm thinking why spend more than a grand for an Apple laptop or worse, resort to using a PC laptop. Now there is an affordable alternative and I'm hoping in the next year or so the options will expand.

Poor, poor haters.
It sucks being a hater, doesn't it? It's gonna be a great quarter!
I am not surprised. My iPad has become more and more useful to me each day as I figure out how using it suits me best. It has become the one of my primary devices in a very short time!
Good to hear! I'll be getting one as soon as business picks up! Another month or two!
I can't wait for folders, and the new design of the homescreen with backgrounds and new dock make it look a lot more open. Much less cramped. Only 8 days!
You forgot OS 4.0 doesn't come to iPad until the fall, like September.

Only 8 days for our phones. It's the fall for our iPads.

Yep same with me...Desktop/iMac, MacBook, iPad, iPhone, Time Capsule, MobileMe and I'm good to go.
I will say though that once my original intel iMac/desktop stops working...I will most likely not replace it and just keep using my original intel MacBook and when it breaks, I will probably replace both with the new, soon to be released, MBA.
Then I will have an MBA, iPad, 4G iPhone, Time Capsule, MobileMe and be truly a mobile guy able to setup shop where ever I am!

You 'll be able to lay on your bed, on your sofa, in the park, sit in a cafe and read your textbooks, journals, lecture note pdfs, magazines etc. you can't do that with ease with a 13" macbook, or any laptop or netbook for that matter. There's an overlap between the devices surely, but those needs are only partly met for some people, and for others (such as myself) not at all - I 've never been able to read a journal article, merely (skim through it) without printing it. Same for books, I hope the ipad changes that, I don't have one yet (I am in the UK) but I am planning to get one soon, and see how it works. My impressions with e-ink readers have been positive. The fact that besides being a "reader" the ipad adds a multitude of added computing/social/etc. functions is very welcome.
On top of which, there will be the demonstration effect.....
Yes, I've been getting a lot of that. One of my daughter's friends, after playing with three music programs I have; Pro keys, Magic Piano and forScore, said: "That's it! I'm buying it." She's a music person, plays the clarinet, piano, etc.
I've had the same thing happen with my iPhone and pro audio test app. I bunch of my audio minded friends switched phones and carriers just so they could buy AudioTools, now available for the iPad.
These numbers don't include the international rollout which is just getting underway and by all accounts is going very well.
That, plus the aforementioned release of the 4.0 OS, will undoubtedly spike June sales-- my guess to well over a million. Even if sales slow a bit over the rest of summer and fall, then you're moving into the Christmas season. And of course you've got to figure in the supply constraints easing at some point, which have surely somewhat hampered sales to date.
Seems pretty much a slam dunk that Apple will sell at least 10 million iPads in just the eight months of its first year of availability-- which I believe is at the outside extreme of what even the most feverish analyst was predicting.
And then there's the competition, which I think is interesting. One of the arguments against likely mass market success for the iPad was that it was this neither fish nor fowl thing that consumers had no particular reason to want. That, contrasted to the success of the iPhone, which was understood to be a product that people already wanted and needed.
Given the its success, that same quality may work in the iPad's favor. Android powered tablets won't be "just another tablet" like Android phones are just more phones. The iPad has quite literally created this market from scratch (yes, I know tablets existed, they sucked and nobody bought them so get over it).
Anyone coming in now with a me-too product are going to have to do more work to convince people that their iteration of the iPad is worth having, because there isn't that comfort factor of going down to Verizon to get your next phone and just sort of falling into an Android handset.
Apparently, the 2 million DOES include the rollout.

Poor, poor haters.
I for one, am glad it doesn't have a USB port...I hate cables...that's why almost everything I own is either BT or WiFi....my all-in-one printer is WiFi with one pwr cable coming out the back. My iMac has one pwr cable coming out the back, my keyboard and mouse are both BT....my iPhone dock is by my beside to recharge and I update it with my mac maybe once a week. My MobileMe has no cables and along with DropBox does a good job keeping everything in Sync!
I have motorola BT headphones for running with my Nike+ and iPhone...I hate the wired headphones.
My AppleTV has only two cables coming out the back connected to my large flat screen TV replaced all my 'wired' stereo system! I keep the slide show to see all my photos and usually just have one of the internet radio stations playing some light jazz in the background! It meets my music needs and photo needs!
When I get my iPad I want to place in my living room in its stand up dock and have it showing the very elegant origami slide show errr with one pwr cable coming out the back!
Yes, I've been getting a lot of that. One of my daughter's friends, after playing with three music programs I have; Pro keys, Magic Piano and forScore, said: "That's it! I'm buying it." She's a music person, plays the clarinet, piano, etc.

I'm using a Mac Mini paired with a terabyte Firewire 800 external drive and a 24" Cinema Display. The amazing part is that I got a surprising amount for my previous Mac Mini a few months ago when I traded up to the latest top-end Mini. So as much as I have toyed with the idea of going laptop for my main system, the Mini represents a great value. If I can turn over a Mini every two or three years and get good trade-in value, it means that for not much more than the cost of the latest iLife suite/OS+a new harddrive, I can keep my hardware current (well as current as it gets using a Mini). Hopefully Apple will keep updating the Mini, however modestly.
To me the iPad represents a perfect companion to a full-featured computer, whether we're talking a laptop or a desktop system like mine or yours. Less expensive than a Mac laptop, more portable, better battery life, access to tons of low-cost software. What's not to like?

Current studies are showing an increase in demand, but 4.0 could bring a push of demand from the more "techy" people who "need" multi-tasking.
Everybody needs multitasking. That is why Apple is adding it.
