I understood "world" to mean universe. If someone wants to refer to the current hunk of rock we reside in, I hope they would use "Earth" instead.

Unlike others, I believe we will reside outside of this planet.

Oh, so we need to change our way of thinking to fit yours eh? Figures.

So world means universe and earth means this planet. Well, ok, you answered the question in your sphere of understanding of the questions parameters. Fair enough.

Actually, it's T.S. Eliot, "The Hollow Men" IIRC

This is the way the world will end

    The world will end

    The world will end

This is the way the world will end

Not with a bang but a whimper

I know that, I was just implying that it sounds Hari Seldon-ish also. Think about it.

You are right. Not with a bang, but a whimper would fit that series.

Yes, world is a very subjective term all the way from an individual's way of life to the universe as we know it Our world should be the universe. I am a techno-optimist afterall.

We will survive extreme ecological changes. We will survive our technological frankensteins. We will probably survive asteroid collisions if it doesn't happen in the near future. The Sun may or may not go supernova, the models say so, but I'm presuming by that time humanity will be able to jump ship anyways.

There seems to be a lot of pessimists out there though.

So, what do I believe about the end of the world? (I will go with universe on this one for you optimists out there. )

The Universe will end as it began. Unexplainably by any scientific method one day it will just be gone. Just as I believe that there was nothing, and then out of that nothing came the universe, whether by a big bang or if it just appeared I don't care to argue, I believe that when the time comes the universe will simply cease to exist.

Of course I have a biblical backup for my position, I am sure nobody is suprised.

The final goal and expectation of the Christian faith is a new, transformed, and redeemed world where Jesus Christ lives with his people and righteousness dwells in holy perfection.

In order to erase all traces of sin, there will be a destruction of all the earth, stars and galaxies. Heven and Earth will be shaken and will vanish like a vapor, the stars will be dissolved and the elements destroyed.

After that there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth, but that would be another thread.

So it would not matter where we lived in the Universe or how many planets we inhabited. It is all going to dissapear. The thread does not have to end there, if you have your own thoughts on how it will all end that has not been put up so far, chime in. I will stand by my belief, and truthfully it is no less valid than any other put forth here.

For the verses that my opinion was derived from look at:

    Psalms 102:25-26

    Isaiah 34:4; 51:6; 65:17; 66:22

    Romans 8:19-22

    Hebrews 1:12; 12:26-28

    2 Peter 3:7-13

    Haggai 2:6

    Revelation 21:1-4

I will write more about this as I get time. I know some of you don't care, and that is fine. But for those who are interested I am going to write what I see as the steps leading up to the end. I have no time where the steps will happen. I am just going to try to put them in order and you can draw any parallels you like or ignore the whole thing, you have the mouse vote with your clicking!

I think the end of the world will be either the recognition that UFOs are real (either space and/or time aliens - or us from the future) or the internet becoming sentient.

As far as some kind of global destruction, judaism and christianity picked up that idea (like most others) from the pre-existing belief systems of the region when they were being formed. Revealed religions tend to be pretty violent, in general, of course. "bible myths and their Parallells in other religions" and "christianity before christ" are faily good books documenting pre-judaic writings of the near east and the synchronism that followed. One wonders what the new testament would have been like had it not been edited so many times (Ex: council of nicea) and primary written by saul/paul , someone as far removed (and women-hating) from the jewish "cult of christ" as could been seen.

    I gotta go pee

I don't think the world will end in my lifetime.

I don't think the world will be destoyed as such but it will certainly be much changed for the worst by Mankind.
