The only clueless person who didn't see this coming was apparently you.

Everyone else - esp. those registered on or reading this site would know that Apple updates the iPhone in June.

    Every June.

    For the last three years.

Take it back, wait and then get the new iPhone when it comes out.

If you really are a week out, I'm sure AT&T will work with you. Despite all the snarky comments about them on the 'net, whenever I have dealt with them they have been very accommodating. If you go into a physical store, just make sure it's a company store and not an authorized reseller. If you go to att.com and search for stores near you, just see if there is one that doesn't have "Authorized Reseller" in the title. Those are company stores.

    1) The 3GS was the exact same size as it's 3G (it even used the same casing) so there was no shrinking involved.

    2) The iPhone 3GS is still the same device category as the other iPhones (obviously) so I have no idea why you keep coming it to a completely different decive type.

    3) maybe Apple takes more net profit for the iPhone because it can do to carrier contracts, subsidations and user demand; and less for the iPad because it's an unknown product type (or one that has failed miserably) and it's not a "requirement" the way a phone is, bit your assertion is erroneous.

Your comment might have some merit for the original iPhone, but this is round four. And Apple has a pretty darn good track record of taking care of issues. I'd say the risk of something bad happening are practically nil.

Granted, nothing is perfect - but this is Apple, not some other fly by night company (JooJoo anyone?)

I've also been across a significant portion of the country and found little problem with AT&T. Most of the hype for Verizon is just that. There is no one cellular company with perfect coverage, and if AT&T doesn't cover where you are - sucks to be you, but it doesn't mean AT&T is universally bad for everyone.

Personally I can't wait for Verizon to get the iPhone. Let all the data hogs go kill their network and free up capacity on AT&T's. The end of the bogus "unlimited" plans was WAY overdue. Billing, especially for wireless data, should be based on actual usage.

Apple has executed continuously since the original iPhone launch. Heck, since the first iMac and then iPad.

    Overanalyzing much?

Or sour grapes that you won't be able to join the launch fun (for whatever reason)?

    You don't feel comfortable pre-ordering - that's your prerogative.

I (and 600,000 or so others) do. Even if your pessimistic fears are realized, I still have at least 30 days or perhaps more to return it. Not that I'm worried in the least that I will have to do so.

EDIT: For someone with the handle you have, you sure don't seem to relish it...

People who call themselves free thinkers tend to be the most conventional thinkers of all. The real free thinkers don't advertise, they just do it.

I think it's going to be yet another huge quarter of adds for AT&T. If they pass Verizon in size, then it's over... Verizon will have lost any leverage they thought they had with Apple (not that they have any anyway).

What I'm interested in are how many of the new android phone sales are sales to existing android owners or new adds. That would be a truly fascinating statistic.

When would it be high enough for you to not have claimed they should have anticipated? 100x?

So is Apple going to get an engineer to leave a prototype of the next update in a bar?

I have the basic $49/mo 450 voice and $30/mo data 3G plan and don't want to loose that. Looking at At&t's current voice plan of $69 a month for the base 450 plan now is highway robbery!!! I'm totally not wanting to loose this!

also, does anyone know how trading in your old phone works? I'd like to recycle it like i did my old iPod Mini. Apple gave me a 10% discount on my new purchase for doing so. Anyone know if they will do this for the iPhone?

I am supposed to get $100 of the price so my 32GB iPHONE 4, so it will only cost me $199. at radio shack ONLY , not BestBuy or Apple retail stores..

I agree. Phone companies are like airlines - they're all equally bad, but the one you're dealing with at that time annoys you more than the ones you're not using.

My current pet peeve is AT&T's ordering system. I can understand them being buried with iPhone orders, but it's now 2 days later and you still can't upgrade to ANY phone.

More importantly, much of the damage was self-inflicted. Apple sold 600,000 phones through ALL carriers on the first day. Lets' assume that 80% of those were in the U.S., so that means 500,000 orders were for AT&T phones.

AT&T claims that they had 13,000,000 requests for verification on their system. That means that, on average, they got 26 requests for verification for every phone sold - presumably because they were dumping people out of the system so frequently, If there system weren't crashing all the time, they would have had 1/26th the amount of transactions. A system that crashes that badly under load is poorly designed. A well designed system will fail gracefully - even with unexpected loads.

Heck, the entire system is archaic. I wanted to merge two lines into a Family Plan. Here's the procedure:

Went to the AT&T store. They processed my iPhone 4 upgrade order, but couldn't merge the lines. They gave me a phone number to call. I went home and called that number. They took the information and said they couldn't help, but transferred me to another number. The new number did the same thing (long holds with each transfer, of course). I asked the third person if they could really get me to the right person this time and they assured me that they could. Really long hold this time, then another transfer. They told me the correct office was closed and I would have to call back the next day. They gave me a 'direct' number to call.

Next day, called the 'direct' number. First person gathered all the information and said this was the wrong department. Transferred me to someone else. They took all the information (interestingly, you have to verify your identity EVERY SINGLE BLASTED TIME) and couldn't help me. Finally, they got me to someone else who said she could help me and she started the process of merging the lines. After about 15 minutes of going through things and being on hold, she said she couldn't do it - and transferred me to someone else. FINALLY, this person was able to complete the transaction - but it took 25 minutes online ("still processing. still processing..."). So, after 30 hours of elapsed time and probably about 2 hours of actual time invested, I had the phone lines merged.

But they couldn't upgrade the phones online - I have to do that in an AT&T store or online. Unfortunately, the online store is unable to process the order - 2 days later.

That's a lousy system by ANY standards and can't be blamed simply on the fact that the iPhone demand is high. As I said, though, my experience with other cell phone carriers is that they're all equally bad.

No one has to 'take' the removal of unlimited. If you had an unlimited plan before, you are allowed to keep it when you switch to the iPhone 4.

HOWEVER, if you choose, you can now get a less expensive plan. I checked my usage and I only exceeded 200 MB two months since I got my iPhone 3G. So even if I pay the extra for those months, I'll still be saving a ton of money compared to the unlimited plan. What's not to like?

Yeah, until the iPhone 4 data useage blows out your 2GB plan and you get nailed in overages.

A whooping $10 for one more GB, less per GB than the two previous GBs, which is opposite from the way most carriers charge for overages.

If you are worried, and are too lazy to check your cellular usage pattern then don't switch from an Unlimited plan.

it's amazing people can complain about this cost saving option for most users.
